Maybe you weren't in the North anymore and that is why it seemed so strange to you?
I am glad to hear you got so see some of the state outside the I-95 corridor. You really don't have to shake your head and move on when you see us. We don't bite. Many of us have been here for 8, 9 generations, you may actually learn something about Maryland outside of the suburban bubble.

I still avoid the DC suburbs at all costs. Quarantine zone, as andrew_s says. Stay clear of the barbarians behind the beltway. You tell little kids horror stories at night about the strange kneejerk liberals who can't even eat a crab right and have never tried Old Bay.
I commend you on at least leaving and seeing the bay and the eastern shore (A rare experience for a Montgomery Countier like yourself). But keep in mind, the rest of Maryland thinks you're the weirdos who have it wrong.
Tezcatlipoca considering in elementary school we had Maryland Day where each of us got a free crab to eat and all knew how to open it, your pet theory is a bit off Maryland is such a freaky state with its Southern people, the normal people in the DC/Baltimore area and the somewhat Appallachin people in the panhandle. People also eat Old Bay and drink Natty Bo everywhere in Maryland because its cheap and good, I have a can of Old Bay on my desk right now.

"Somewhat Appallachin People"..... sounds like the name of bad Alt-bluegrass band.
No, it's not. First off, it's not my theory, it's the popular stereotype and has much basis in peoples' experiences. 9/10 Montgomery Countiers I've met fit into that stereotype. Many haven't even seen the bay. Either somehow I managed to meet only Montgomery County's worst, or you're the exception.

It's all a perspective. As stated before, Montgomery County is considered the least Maryland-like county by the other counties. Your county's reputation unfortunately precedes your personal experiences.
Maryland, My Maryland isn't freaky or bad in any way. It's called history, and should not be forgotten.
I'm confused as to how much of Maryland's history seems to be forgotten now. Even my little kids' history book from when I was four says that Maryland attempted to secede but was forced in, and that it is a historically southern state; these days all the kids seem to think Maryland was some proud bastion of US loyalty which just isn't true.

That's because, according to AJ, you're not "normal".

Apparently "normal" is synonymous with suburban. Though I don't consider DC and Baltimore to be alike or that similar in culture. I could never mistake one for the other.
I remember learning Maryland My Maryland in music class and thought how much it ripped off O Christmas Tree but looking at it now, its quite the insane song. Outside the I-95 corridor, lots of Marylanders for whatever reason believe themselves to be southerners, I just kind of shake my head and move on. When I went to Salisbury I did however forget I was in the North, that is strange stuff.
Welcome to the REAL Maryland! Glad you had a chance to visit.

I steer clear of DC whenever I get the chance, and youd be surprised at how many folks around here dont know how to pick a damn crab. Its appalling! Most just want the meat and be done with it all while purposefully missing the social event that is drinking beer and picking crabs.

Normal?!? Yall aint normal your VERY different from me. Hell even my own little brothers are worlds away different then me. My mom southern raised got caught up in montgomery county and turned into a galvanized yankee when they were young(only happy though of being in a broken home where I was raised in 2 + homes). They tease me ALL the time about how I talk and act.

Sad but true. Everyone ALWAYS wants to forget history and so many against southern culture in maryland say "it was over 150 years ago who cares?". Well I do. Im proud of my roots and want to remember them just as I want future generations to remember me.

Couldn't agree more. I dont hate yankees or even natives that consider themselves northerners, I just hate those that are ignorant to the strong southern culture that is here.
