At College Park when people say they are from Frederick, it can mean anywhere in Frederick County. I made a mistake if I said "downtown Frederick" as ghetto....yes in fact I've heard the city has a very historic core, though you unfortunately can't see it from Interstate 270 or 70....actually you can't see unique parts of any city from the Interstates except Cumberland.
I've just heard the "city of Frederick" is ghetto while places like Walkersville, Middletown, and Urbana are nice. But I highly doubt anywhere in Frederick can get as "shady" as Wheaton or certain parts of Gaithersburg and Rockville. My friends from the county say illegal immigrants are making their way into certain parts but that's a problem no matter where you go in the country.

And that is a good thing as you cannot see 270 or 70 from downtown Frederick.
Check it out sometime. Good place for a pub roll.

Actually Hagerstown is getting a much needed face lift in the downtown area and thus it is quite a bit better than dullsville these days. The downtown now has several good restaurants, a couple are even excellent, and there are art galleries, cool shops and a lake in city park as well. There are also some lovely architectural gems in Hagerstown as it is one of the oldest cities in MD. City Park is quite pretty and has a surprizingly excellent find arts museum. There certainly are not as many terrific places to shop as Frederick has but they do have them and they are nice. Frederick is definitely more hip but pricier. So you have to pick how you want to live and what you can afford! If you live in Hagerstown it is only 30 minutes to Frederick and an hr to Rockville. It isn't a great commute during prime time but it isn't bad during the off times. If you live in Frederick you have a lot more people, traffic and costs to deal with as well as a lot more cultural activities, cool restaurants, stores and more expensive homes. Just depends what you want for your money I guess.

I would agree that there are some great houses there and reasonably priced. The commute would be too much for me, but I did consider it briefly.

Actually, both 5th St. and All Saints (broken link) are becoming decidedly less "ghetto".

Hello d56alpine - I was looking at houses in Frederick on the web. What is the area like along Butterfly Lane heading toward Mt. Phillip Road? Are developments like Monarch Ridge, Golf View and The Overlook in safe areas? Thanks for your help.

Yes, those areas are safe. I lived in development next to the Overlook and had no problems with the area at all.

We prefer not living in a cookie cutter type neighborhood, as we have lived in Florida and got sick of them.
I know there are a slough of posts on the subject, but I feel that what I am asking has not been addressed. Please accept my apologies if I missed other posts about the area that answered my questions.
I am originally from Long Island, NY, and my wife is from Southern Minnesota. We simply are looking for something that is a compromise of the two areas.
Ideally we would like to find a place that is safe and affordable. I will have to find a job either in DC or elsewhere in the region, but that will be addressed once we settle on which area we want to live in.
From what I have read, Hagerstown sounds very appealing, and Frederick sounds even more so. The biggest difference I have noticed in the two cities is the price of renting.
If anybody could help us, please, please do.
Are there Customer Service jobs in Hagerstown and / or Frederick?
Why is Frederick more expensive to live in?
Which city is safer, and which areas are good in each city?
Is a commute to DC or Baltimore feasible from either city? Will it be necessary to commute for work?
Thank you in advance for all of your help.....
My family greatly appreciates it.

I do not know about the customer service jobs.
Frederick is more expensive due to it's proximityto D.C. and Baltimore.
Hagerstown is safer for same reason and lower population.
You can commute but a lot of people do.The commute to D.C. is the worst of the two. TrAveling by train from Frederick is possible but you will have to drive to a train station from Hagerstown.Their are other large towns that pay better the closer you get to Baltimore and D.C..
