Poverty all over the place.

It's disgusting!
Why don't you buy a car. I guess some people want a free ride

It is Liberal Speak in Maryland that if you are not supportive of gay marriages, then you are "intolerant" and "Nazi-like".

Modern definition The states in dark red are almost always included in modern day definitions of the South, while those in medium red are usually included. The striped states are sometimes/occasionally considered Southern

For the states in the middle, I think it has more to do with culture and perception than drawing a strict geographical line...

No doubt there are citizens of "border" states like Delaware/Maryland/Missouri that identify passionately with a more "Southern" culture (the rural and small town areas), whilst other citizens of those same states (specifically those of the more urban & metropolitan cities) would wrinkle their noses at the very suggestion that they are of anything other than the East Coast/Mid-Atlantic/Mid-West.

I happen to know that there are even large numbers of the residents of cities in the Deep South (Memphis, Atlanta, New Orleans, Austin) that hardly recognize their own "Southernness" and, instead, think of themselves as urbane "city folk" more so than Southerners.

Judge Terror: you sound like you are happier in South Carolina. Good for you. A lot of people say that the culture of a place should not affect your happiness. I don't always agree. Yeah, sometimes it isn't internal. It can be your environment that is making life and the pursuit of happiness difficult if not impossible.

If you are a conservative or libertarian Republican who likes to live in a place free from perceived excessive taxation and regulation then Montgomery County with its great schools, public safety, health care, and other public services is not for you.

By the way, I checked and Charleston's, Aiken's and Columbia's crime rates are at or above the national average and much higher than Rockville's and Gaithersburg's which are far below the national average.

Unless you happen to be one for the few wealthy commuter types who can afford to pay +400K for house within 1-2 hrs of your job. My husband who does make good money in his field (+40K a year) can not afford to buy our family a home here unless I went back to work full time in my field and dumped our girls (ages 1 & 3) into daycare. Between crime, cost of living, and school violence we have no choice but to leave. Which is hard considering I am a the 4th generation (our girls are the 5th) Maryland and on my husbands side it is the 3rd and 4th generation. To have to leave you parents and grandparents to save yourself and your children is a very hard/sad thing to go thru. So please please look hard and watch/read the news before you even consider moving to Maryland. Whatever you do stay FAR AWAY from the whole Baltimore/DC area unless you can afford a gated community and private schooling for your children. Even the best schools in are area (Howard County) are full of violence don't let the standard testing scores full you.
Howard County schools are NOT full of violence- and Ellicott City was recently voted the 4th best city to live in in America.

I guess I am as bitter as vermont08, but I don;t agree with the schools part in howard. they are good, but why do you have to pay an arm and a leg to have a decent school system? All schools should provide a decent education, its' not fair to have the education separated by county. It would be nice if the state had a joint effort to make ALL the schools in Maryland up to/above standard. I will miss my family, but I have no problem moving on to bigger and better things...
