Hark to an exiled son's appeal, Maryland!
My mother State! to thee I kneel, Maryland!
For life and death, for woe and weal, Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird they beauteous limbs with steel, Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not cower in the dust, Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust, Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust, Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-

With fearless Lowe and dashing May, Maryland! My Maryland!

That baffles minions back again, Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek, Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek, Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek From hill to fill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake, Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not yield the vandal toll, Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control, Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul, Maryland! My Maryland!

I hear the distant thunder-hum, Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum, Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come! Maryland! My Maryland!
thankyou thankyou!

..The Hwys are congested because everyyyyone wants to go to the beach...

Congested because they do not build any new freeways! They have "Studied" the "Inter county connector" (A new highway) for 40years!

Yes, MD was part of the Union, but that is not what classifies a state as a southern state. The answer to the question is MD is a southern state because it is below the Mason-Dixon line (we are called the Old Line State for a reason). Now, The south doesn't want us (calls us yankees) because we were in the Union. The north calls us Dixie, because we are below the mason-dixon line. No one wants us!

P.S. Maryland is a WONDERFUL state. (i have a tatto of a MD blue crab on my foot!) If you want city living-move to B-more. You want to ski, go to Allegany county. You want the beach? Ocean city! Slow paced life? Eastern Shore! Boating? Annapolis! We have the Naval Academy! The best Community College in the U.S. You can get ANYTHING you want in MD. And the highways and road rage? My husband is a truck driver...he says it isn't a MD thing, it is an East Coast thing...and I agree.

Baltimore is very safe in some sections but dangerous in others. Just like any of the major cities in the U.S.

5. There's no great in-state rivalry for College Football. (We're missing out from such matchups other states have like Texas vs. Texas A & M, Alabama vs. Auburn, South Carolina vs. Clemson, and many more.)

6. Too many D.C. Elites lives in Maryland. They are disconnected from reality.

7. High Taxes

8. High rate of Crime in Baltimore City and Prince George's County, enough said.

9. The Tyranny of Montgomery County where they regulate everything to death. (No smoking in any of restaurants, bars, despite it is a private establishment and should be free from government intrusion)

10. One Party Machine in the State where they control virtually everything in the State.

If you live in the State of Maryland and you have a brain. Get out! Now I'm living in the American South, in the Great State of South Carolina.
God, I want out of this state so much! Central Maryland is like another version of the worst parts of New Jersey. Everything you said is true, plus some. Rude, obnoxious people added to having to live in ridiculously close proximity to one another and throw in the stress of high costs of living, you have a volatile mix.

Plus, there is nothing in this state that justifies housing prices. I've seen 500 square foot houses, or smaller, across the street from things like fire stations being sold for as much as half a million dollars.

The only thing that convinced BMW to relocate was cheap land and very attractive tax breaks. The well educated work force, well they relocated there as did 100 of businesses that do business with BMW. I heard the traffic in that corridor is now a nightmare.

I totally agree; I spent a sentence of six yrs in nouveaux riche Potomac. It was lovely to look at, but the inhabitants were very divorced from reality--- limousine liberal types. I was happy with my kids' schools, and the $$$ I made on the sale of the house. At the same time, everything was taxed to the gills and extremely expensive. So much happier across the river in VA!
