patapsco, were you part of a CUR for the rescue group? I have a standard poodle who came from Oklahoma via a CUR run... nothing but respect for the good folks who donate their time to the cause... The whole litter was found in Dodge City KS, then were sent down to Tulsa Poodle Club for neutering/grooming/evaluations, then out to their new homes from there (I was in St. Louis MO at the time). Several CUR runners got him to me by driving a couple hours each. I love their motto "It makes a difference to this one".

I made the commute from Salem to Boston for five years on the commuter rail and had no problem with it. Beverly and many other towns are on the same line. Newburyport and Rockport are also beautiful and accessible via commuter rail but can also be a little pricey. Here's the MBTA's website that will give you the towns along those routes.
MBTA.com > Official Website for Greater Boston's Public Transportation System
Click on "rail" in the upper right hand corner.
