Nope, only a few cities do -- Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Chelsea, and Marlborough are the ones I know of.

In 24 mths I will be leaving MA for SC and I can't freaking wait. There is no way I can afford to have another child that I desperately want or afford my own home here and I make decent money. It's depressing.

I was born and raised here and I'm ready to make the change. I can always visit if I miss MA but I don't think I'll ever come back....

That's pretty far out in the future ... how did you plan that out? I think affordability is a relative term. Anyone making "decent money" here can buy a starter home if they can deal w/the maintenance. I think the underlying issue here is people want more than they can afford, i.e. a 2400 s.f. house in the best neighborhood, so those people will have to move to another state.

I grew up in Southern Florida (West Palm) and moved to NYC at the age of 19 to be with my boyfriend.

We are moving to Massachusetts next month and I'm teriffied. Not knowing how the cost of living will be.

Actually it should be a little less than NYC. Wouldn't sweat it to much.

Default Don't worry, hilary

It will be quite a lot less than NYC: lower state income tax, no city income tax, lower sales and restaurant taxes, much lower rents and puchase prices for real estate, gas about $.40 cheaper per gallon, no $4-8 toll every time you drive through a tunnel or over a bridge. Property taxes are way lower in the Boston area than in New York and metro New Jersey suburbs, although in the city itself taxes on houses are pretty low, assuming you can afford to buy one (how about $800K for a 100 year-old, 1,600 sq. ft. frame row house in a dumpy section of Brooklyn? You can buy a whole three-decker house in Somerville or Dorchester for much less.) Some things are higher--water and sewer rates in the MWRA district vs. NYC Water Board, home heating costs, excise tax on your car, possibly auto insurance. T fares are now about as high as subway fares. But overall Mass seems much more affordable. You may miss some things about NYC but the cost of living won't be one of them.

About how much is gas/water/electricity a month?
We don't pay gas or water here and electric is 200-400/month here

I don't know about electric & gas rates in Mass. but I'd guess they're about the same as in NYC, maybe lower. But the weather is colder and most city apartments are relatively cheap to heat because they're in larger buildings, whereas a house or an apartment in a house (typical in Mass.) has more exposure to outdoor temperatures and is therefore more expensive to heat. Your electric bill sounds fantastically high!

I don't think it is as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The cost of housing is the only high cost item. Everything else is pretty comparable. Even housing is no longer as extreme as all that, considering the soaring costs of housing in Florida, out West and in the big cities throughout the country.
