Want to move from Ohio to Mass. Need help finding a cheaper area but still nice for a family? (Boston: for sale, how much)

My husband and I have loved the state of Mass. since we were both kids. Now, we want to move there from Ohio. We are looking for any advice on a cheaper area that is also family friendly. We are not really into the big city, something a little smaller and quietier would fit our lifestyle. We have special needs children and do not want to live in the inner city or places where living is rough. I hope that makes sense. Any advice for a family that wants to move into Mass. and settle down somewhere that is not to costly would be a great help.

Please anyone that can help us we really need it. Any of the 6 New England states cheaper then the others. Where is the best place in anyones opinion. We love Mass. but is there places that are still affordable?

Yes, there are places that are still affordable in MA. But of course, affordability is a subjective term. With a little more specifics perhaps we could help you out a bit more. (ie. price range, job situation etc...).

New England has expensive areas that bump up next to less expensive areas within a very close distance. For example you can live in Tolland county CT and buy a new home for $240-300K -where the same home 80 miles away near Boston or in south western CT close to NYC will cost more then double.

Western Massachusetts is generally the cheapest part of Massachusetts- but it will be higher then all of Ohio. Eastern Connecticut is inexpensive for New England- while the Hartford CT area will be about the same or slightly less then greater Chicago.

It depends on what part of the 6 state region you choose to live- what type of housing situation you choose and your income/financial situation.

The cheapest housing of all will be in northern New Hampshire , northern Maine, and the 'north east Kingdom' of Vermont.

We have a few used houses in our neighborhood for sale here in Sturbridge,Ma.
Our friends here are from Ohio.

Djak, STAY IN OHIO!! Believe me, you don't want to move to Mass! I'm actually doing the exact opposite, moving from Boston area to Cleveland area. I LOVE northeast Ohio.

I'm a MA native, but have lived in Ohio for 40 years. I thank God I did not have to raise a family in taxachusetts. I know it's beautiful there, and I love the sense of history, but Ohio is just as beautiful. Why would you want to commit financial suicide, experience rude, aggressive, drivers, and the politics... we won't even go there.

Well if you had stayed in Massachusetts, and bought a home 25 years ago- I wonder how much that house would be worth today? Far more then anyplace in Ohio- 'financial suicide' can have a double meaning.
