My first question is whether you are a student wishing to live in an area with other students around. Just so you're aware, most of Allston is heavily populated with undergrads, which could be a negative for someone who's not part of that scene, due to noise. If you are looking for student neighborhoods, an area similar to Allston is the Cleveland Circle neighborhood in Brighton. A more urban, and probably more expensive undergrad area is the Fenway section of Boston Proper, and the adjacent area of Kenmore Square and vicinity (as in the blocks at the far west end of Back Bay). The Mission Hill neighborhood in Roxbury has become a popular student area as well.

Other possibilities depend on whether you've got a car or will want access to public transit, and what location(s) you'll need to commute to, as well as what kind of feel you want in your neighborhood and what kind of demographics you'd like your neighbors to have. Some areas not too far from Allston are Brookline and Newton. Both are upscale inner-suburban towns. Newton is largely a family kind of town, though large enough to have some variety in its populace, with a few single people scattered through its population mix. Brookline is similar overall, but has more students and single professionals in the more (somewhat) urban neighborhoods toward the north side, like Brookline Village, Coolidge Corner, and the blocks just south of Commonwealth Ave. in Allston.

When it comes to finding roommates, in addition to the usual suggestion of Craigslist, if you're a student, I'd also suggest checking with your school's housing office to find out whether they have listings of off-campus properties, or any sort of roommate matching service or info on where you might find such a service.
