the slate is clean and the Yanks are just a half game out of the Wild Card folks. Who really cares about their AL east record? Not me!!
I actually would like the Sox to win the division and see if they can hold their own. I'll take the Wild Card any day! [quote, NYerlostinMA] Take the wild card any day? I'd say yes and no. This playoff format that's been in effect since the mid '90's has its pros and cons, but this is the format you're dealing with now. Given that reality, it does seem smart for a team to avoid letting pride get them caught up in the idea that nothing less than the division title is acceptable. A team may be better off in the long run if they use the regular season to try different combinations of players, to bring up rookie prospects and see how they do with the big club, etc., so they take the strongest possible team into the playoffs, knowing they have the wild card to fall back on if the experimenting costs them a few wins. On the other hand, everything else being equal, I'd rather win the division, to avoid automatically giving up home field in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Well- you have a point about home field advantage, but luckily the AL has World Series home field no matter what. And to be honest- I haven't seen any one sided home victories in recent years anyway.
Let's put it this way- I'm not worried at all right now. My Yanks are starting to play solid ball day in and day out and their bullpen has gone from probably one of the worst in the sport to arguably, one of the top 3. The Yanks have handled the Indians and Detroit now. But here comes the real test- LAA. They always seemed to have the Yanks pegged somehow. And this year they are hands down- just really good. BUT- here comes Joba the Yankee!! 98 mph at the head and then drops out into the dirt. Magglio looked like a dufus. This is Joba- get used to him..... he is the successor of Mariano folks... BTW- Wily Mo hit a monster HR today! |

Joba looked good.
Losing three in a row sure hurt, but Boston returned to form. NY did too. It'll be a tough fight for that wild card. |

I think the wild card will be the Yanks. They will have to go on an extended losing streak to let it slip away.
Seattle is now 3 games out.... |
