I am currently renting in Cambridge and take the red line to work at Downtown boston. Looking to move to a district with good public schools and easy commute with public transport to downtown preferably under 30-40mns. I will mostly be commuting during rush hour and will have my 4yr old transitioning to kindergarten next year and will be the one picking/dropping her. Considering Arlington/Belmont but both involve at-least one or more transfer, so looking for any other suggestions...

The best school district served by the subway would be Brookline or Newton, but be prepared to pay a lot more for housing. I would argue that Boston Public Schools can be just as good, but do require more effort to make it work. I'm quite pleased with the BPS schools my children attend, as are the other BPS parents that I know, but i realize that experience isn't universal. I've heard that Quincy is decent, don't really know much about the other districts directly served by the 'T.

The other consideration depends what you mean by on the subway. Are you willing to consider a town that is near the subway, like Watertown or Arlington? Would a bus ride prior to the train be acceptable? If so, that greatly expands your list of options.

West Newton has an express bus to downtown as well as the commuter rail and might be a wee bit cheaper than other parts of newton that are on the green line. Brookline would be the obvious first choice (IMO), if you can afford it.

I have heard some really great things about the Public School System in Cambridge. Were the people telling me that off the mark?

Cambridge has lottery system for schools, and it's a tad all over the place from my understanding. while Boston uses lottery as well, walkability score plays big role: ie, if you can walk to elementary school, there is very high probability to get into it. Cambridge is known to send kids by bus to a school in the other part of town, even though there is a school right across the street from them (happened to my friends)

other than that, I support the "obvious choices" of Brookline and Newton.
