Default Moving to Rutland,Ma

Hello ... Thinking of moving to beautiful Rutland, Ma where there seems to be huge growth. How are minorities and newcomers treated in town? I am sure most people are great but concerned as we have young children and would hate to put them in a bad spot. Any end in sight for the new developments going up? Seems like most hills are getting sub divisions. How well r roads cleared in the winter? Thanks for your honest thoughts!!

I am a native of central MA. Most people in the reagion are indifferent to minorities. It's all about how you conduct yourself. If you are a civilized person, you will be respected. If not, you will be ignored. Rutland is a very nice, family friendly town.

Thank you so much for your reply. I hated to even ask the question honestly. We are a quiet, average, everyday family and are looking forward to moving.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the town regionalizes its high school, Wachusett, with four other towns. It's the second or third largest high school in central ma. It's a great school, but some feel the towns lose their small town charm when your kid goes to a school of 2,000 students.

I traveled 122 and 122A for the past 10 years in the winter. Rutland's roads are better than Paxton's roads, which have gone way downhill the last few years, but the roads are not as good as some other towns in the winter. The roads aren't terrible in a storm, but just not the best. I have fishtailed it up the hill towards the center of town many times. I have found that having snow tires really helps. I have only driven the main roads in storms, so I can't comment on the side roads.

Does anyone know or have a feel for how much more they will be building (new homes/developments) in town? I am worried about buying a place in the woods for example and three years later being on the edge of a sub division instead. Is the town planning not to overbuild?? Thanks!

You can give the town a call and ask. I would try the building department first. They passed a by-law in Barre (a few towns over) a couple years ago that there would be a set amount of building permits for new construction given out each year. I don't remember how many, but it's not many.

I think the Great Recession 2.0 will have more to do with limiting development than anything.
