We moved to Metro Bos two yrs ago and I love it. So much to do all year round. I could go to a play, museum, concert or sporting event every night if i had the $$$. It is great to be in an area without chain fast food and stores lining the streets. People in general have a misconception about MA. There is a lot of open space with ranches, forests, preserves, ponds, rivers, parks in the Boston area. Towns are very in tune with conservation of land and preservation of history.
I am not really familiar with Charlton area. I do know it's colder, windier and snowier in Worcester area than Metro West-higher crime rate, too!
Housing $ is probably similar to DC. Of course the further away from Boston price goes down. I know Marlboro, Northboro, etc. are nice areas.
Good Luck!

Right the farther away from Boston the more you say, I not going to go to Boston it's just not worth it. unless its a special occasion. We do have cheaper real estate prices so you can live within you means. Also you can live very well espec. making 6 figures.

Hi Lolahbelle, thanks I will check that out once we are up there, sounds great.
Thanks to everyone for all your input, we will be going up in a couple of weeks and try to find a house. Our house is going on the market on the 22nd of Sept. and our realtor thinks it should sell within a month....guess we will see!
I hope it all works out, it's kind of nerveracking!

dont be nervous!
I hope your move goes well to Massachusetts. My husband may have to take a job in Illinois soon and i HATE the thought of leaving here. I love Massachusetts. The falls are beautiful, the winters no worse than many places and you have Cape Cod, beaches, the mountains are close, Boston is so historical and cultured, great schools, etc. I think you will like it. Good luck.

Global warming aint hit the springfield area LOL!
I lived in Chicopee (near Springfield) and in Ware.
I currently life in North East PA and lived 50 miles east in NY for 19 years.
NorthEast PA has nothing on Western MA as far as winters go!
Don't care what a map says.
There is a really good wood stove dealer in Barre MA. Might want to check them out when you buy a house. Nothin like the feel of a nice pellet stove in the winter!

Winnie- records show that snow cover has decreased over western Mass. in the last 30 years- spring begins a week earlier, and cold weather begins later- western Mass. also has had some of the warmest years on record in the last 20 years-

Could you give me the name of the wood stove dealer in Barre? I love wood stoves and plan on getting one, if the house we buy doesn't already have one.
Our house is going on the market one week from Friday and our agent thinks it will sell within a month, since the DC market is still pretty good, not like it used to be and the prices have dropped, but listings are selling. So now I am getting nervous because we don't have a place we like yet. Will go up next week and look!

getting nervous about moving to MA
|
Nervous? I'd be terrified!
Please do yourself a favor and RENT. Unless you like grossely overpriced houses that need constant maintenance and repair because they're OLD, unfriendly rude people, bitter cold winters that will freeze you to the bone while you go from a store to the parking space, piles of brown dirty snow everywhere because the plowing is as sloppy as the big dig, tunnels that collapse killing drivers passing by, horrendous traffic on all roads during commute hours with a 1+ hour commute, horrendous traffice off-commute hours because they are fixing whatever broke from the sloppy big dig constructions, potholes everywhere because they don't repair the roads correctly and the holes keep re-occurring, 24-hour stores that close at 2am, escalating crime and gangs that no one wants to admit and is just getting worse, chances are you are NOT going to like it! Be prepared to either live unhappily or move out so again make sure you RENT! Or better yet move to somewhere else where you'd have more chances to be happy, life is short and moving is hard so make sure you make the best decision you can. My 2 cents.
