I think Bridgewater or Raynham would be the best compromise. You can still take the commuter rail to Boston and she can drive 495 to and from Bourne - a much better ride than Route 3, albeit ~50 miles each way.

I will just reiterate that if you can possibly find an arrangement that puts in you into Ruggles Station vs South Station via the commuter rail, this is going to be your better bet.

If you're heading to South Station you're looking at:
Car (and parking) to Commuter Rail to Red Line to Green Line.... that four points of possible failure.

Subway only Option:
Car (plus traffic AND parking) to Red Line to Green Line is only 3 failure points, but still, no picnic even if you cut out the commuter rail.

Commuter Rail and walk or bus:
If you take the commuter rail to Ruggles, you've got a 15 minute walk to LMA, or a 5 minute bus ride. On average, probably quicker to walk if you include the sunk time waiting for the bus.

My point is, the Mass Bay transit system is HORRIFIC. You're going to have very few days when the green, red, and commuter rails are ALL goign to be running on time. The route to Ruggles vs south station erases several of these failure points.

Chaxey's advice is good. To add to that, the Old Colony Lines (Middleborough/Lakeville and Plymouth) as well as the Greenbush Lines only stop at South Station in the city, not Back Bay or Ruggles. The Franklin Line and the Providence/Attleborough Lines run through Ruggles station before terminating at South Station (via Back Bay Station). Stopping at Ruggles Station would put you MUCH closer to work at Longwood. The walk is also a fairly easy one through college campuses (NEU and Wentworth).

I work in Woods Hole and live on the Cape and my commute this summer was BRUTAL.....it would take me 1.5 hours to get home which would normally take me 45 mins.

I was beyond stressed and threw out the "We're LEAVING THE CAPE" sentiment more than once this summer.

Thankfully it's only for the summer. ;-)

Thanks for all the insights. We are still undecided and mostly leaning towards weekly commute. I dont know whether to take up the challenge of daily commuting.
How are the peter pan bus that runs from falmouth to boston, do they run on time. The suggested times are 1:45 mins, so if I take it on mondays, can I be in work on time, reliably.
