the foothills of the Berkshires in Ashfield....we have lived here 32 yrs in this wonderful quaint picturesquetown. Lots of diverse people, great place for children to be raised in....plus...only 2 1/2 hrs to Boston, 3 hrs to NY city, VT is 10 miles, NY state 30 mins, RI is 2 hrs

A townhouse on Beacon Hill. The central (yet quiet) location, the history, the architectural charm, access to transit (sure if I could afford it, I'd also have a car, but the subway is just easier sometimes), the Boston Common, etc.

Marblehead or Gloucester or generically Cape Ann.

The answer to the OP's question depends on your age and how easily bored you get especially at night. The country side of me would live in Charlemont or Ashfield (many miles to civilization, as in a town with stuff to do). The city side of me would easily return to Boston, to Brookline or Newton in an upscale townhouse with a chauffeur. I think for me the choice might lead toward Boston, if we are just talking the state of Mass. (and I'm not young).

We are 30, and have 3 children under the age of 5. Definitely looking for civilization

I have never been to the area, and we are being relocated there next month. I grew up in "suburbia" (my hometown was named the safest city in the US in 1995). I want a place where my kids can run and play and I don't have to worry, but I don't have to drive more than 10 minutes to get to the grocery & school & shopping.

My husbands territory will cover the eastern side of Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island. His office will be in Canton - so the Western Side of the state is probably not an option.

Newton, because it's diverse, beautiful, has stuff to do, great schools, the T, and 5 min away from Boston.

I have lived in Massachusetts for years, and if I could live ANYWHERE in Mass, I would live in anywhere on the NH border because it provides for a fast escape!_.
