I have stumbled upon this free e-book online: "A New England girlhood, outlined from memory" by Lucy Larcom about her childhood and life growing up in Beverly in the 19th century.

For those of you history buffs, or if you are just curious about the history of this area, this is a great read.

If someone has suggestions about other historical works from the North Shore, I would appreciate it!

Well, there are the John P. Marquand novels set in a loosely disguised Newburyport. And Hawthorne, of course. What about Jean Stafford's Boston Adventure, where most of the action seems to take place in and around the (also disguised) New Ocean House that stood in Swampscott?

Thanks! I haven't heard about any of those, except Hawthorn. Another one on my to read list is John Updike (who lived in Beverly Farms), and supposedly some of his novels took place in a fictional town, based on Ipswich.
