Someone with your interests is going to do just fine in Boston. Discussing film and books over coffee is probably the closest thing to an official Boston hobby as there is.

Horseriding is easy to find just outside of the city. There are lots of barns offering lessons and trail rides in Mass. Sorry, I haven't ridden in years, so I can't recommend any places off the top of my head, but when I was younger, I never had difficulty finding places to ride within a 45 min. drive of the city.

Yes, companies often will phone across state lines to check references. The out of country phoning is expensive and a bit of a hassle though.
