Well, ya. But "not listening to the naysayers" was how my wife and I ended up moving to Flagstaff, AZ and spending seven years there (losing money every year). We loved the geography, the slower pace of life, the friendly people, and all that. But if you can't make a living, that pretty much trumps everything else.
I found that the people who thrived in Flagstaff were the ones who either (a) embraced "poverty with a view" and didn't mind working two part-time menial jobs and scraping by at a much lower standard of living than they were used to, or (b) had a strong entrepreneurial streak and were able to put successful self-employed/small-business careers together. (Of course, there were many failed attempts to do this, as well, and there was also a lot of bartering going on, people who always wanted to pay you in sandwiches or guitar lessons instead of cash, etc.)
Basically, cities are where you go to make a living -- "paradise" is where you go to take a vacation. I'm not saying don't do it -- I'm just saying it wasn't for us... so we moved back to a city!
