Default Moving to Worcester

Hello Everyone. So I am a single 25 yo guy. I'm moving to Worcester to start school at UMASS Medical. I am trying to figure out where to live. I am hoping to find a 1 br (or even a studio efficiency, basically a 2 room studio, a bedroom/living room and a separate room for kitchen) for 600-700/month with off-street parking.

Glancing through craigslist , I think it's doable. I'm not from the area. I was told certain areas in Worcester are sketchy. I was told to stay away from Clark Univ. Other than that, are there any areas I should avoid? What areas should I be looking at?

Thank you in advanced for reading this post and replying

We moved to Worcester from Connecticut this past summer. I'm sure that there are other areas that are safe, but I can suggest that you look at the 01602 and 01609 zip codes.

Good luck!

If I were y ou, I would stick around the Lake Ave area, close to UMass. The areas to avoid are generally not near that area. Yes, definitely avoid the Main St area, or commonly known as "Main South". The area aroound Clark is not as bad as it is used to be. It gradually gets worse the farther you get from Clark and closer to downtown. The west side, Tatnuck, or the Burncoat area west toward Holdren Street are also nice. Generally avoid anything close to downtown.

Yup, 01602 and 01609 comprise the west side.

Thanks for the heads up on that. So I'll look at Lake Ave, close to UMASS. and the west side/Tatnuck/burncoat. How bad is traffic in the AM from the West Side? I have to be pulling into UMASS at 8 AM to make it ontime for my 8:30 class. I'm not a morning person. So it's a factor!

How affordable is rent on the West side? I went to my adviser's house (well future adviser) for dinner on my way home from Boston 2 weeks ago and he's in 01602 (park/highland). It looks like a nice area... and giant houses (which is too much for 1 person I think). I might have missed smaller places, since the only part of 01602 I saw was westland st.

Oh! You're in CT now?! We lived in West Hartford -- I loved it! Whereabouts in CT are you? (Your "ya'll' made it sound like you're in Texas! )

I really don't know about rentals at all. We bought a house in 01602, off Salisbury Street. I know that, aside from Craigslist, there are all sorts of websites for apartment listings. Type apartment rental into Google and you'll get a bunch of sites to check out.

Regarding your commute -- even though that question wasn't directed to me -- we live off Salisbury and my husband works on North Lake Avenue. It takes him less than 10 minutes to drive there, door to door, and that's at the popular time of 9am. I'd imagine that there's even less traffic at 8am.

If you don't live in the Lake Ave area, you want to keave your house at least 30 minutes ahead of time. The distance is short, but you're dealing with morning commuter traffic going across the city. There are MANY lights, and lots of waiting. Coming from Burncoat Street, you can take 290, but from the west side, there's no way around it.

Look in Shrewsbury as well, it is right across the lake from UMASS and is a nice suburban town with a fair amount of rentals. It will be a much easier commute from there than let's say the west side of Worcester.

Shrewsbury would also be a convenient location as it is right onver the bridge next to UMass. Contrary to popular belief, there is crime in the suburbs, too. There are parts of Worcester that are safer than some parts of Shrewsbury. You will get your share of property crimes in almost every town in MA. Don't let this post scare you away.
