I have another (super helpful) thread going about areas to live near cambridge. One of the things I thought might be worth breaking out into its own thread is if anyone is doing a commute resembling Hingham to Cambridge? Based on feedback in that other thread, we're leaning away from it, but it's such a cute town, I didn't want to give up too easy.

So, if my husband ends up taking a job near central square, will we horribly regret living in Hingham? Just about any commute option would be considered, though driving would he least desirable. Where we live now, he has a commute of about an hour- we were hoping to be less than that but it is a point of reference.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I have a friend who does Hingham to Kendall Square, which is one stop before Central. He lives in Hingham, for which there is a Commuter Rail Stop (West Hingham), but he realized that he is a relatively similar distance from both this stop and the one before it, which is East Weymouth. He is able to save about 15 bucks a month on his commuter rail pass by going to the East Weymouth station instead of West Hingham. I think it takes him around an hour or a bit more to get back and forth, so I wouldn't think it would be a whole lot longer to go one more stop for your husband. He goes right to South Station, where you can get the Red Line, which goes right to Central with no other transfers. I think he likes the ride, as the Commuter Rail especially is relatively quiet and comfortable, even during rush hours. The Red Line can be a bit packed, but such is life. I would advise highly against trying to drive. It would be a major pain and probably take a similar, if not longer amount of time. Right now the monthly pass from East Weymouth is $151 and West Hingham is $163 - they are going up in July though to $189/$212. You get unlimited rides on the T as well with that pass though, so you wouldn't also have to pay for a pass once he gets to South Station.

The only thing to remember if you are going to choose Hingham is that the Commuter Rail is on a schedule, so if you want to go downtown or something on the weekends, you have to follow that schedule (or drive). It also does not run on Sundays.

I agree with AbrasaxEos, as the rail is the only way that I would attempt that as a commute. Way to nutty of a drive. Hingham is like heaven to live in. Great advise above

Missusmiles, I had re read the label of the post. "Will we regret it" ...Hingham is a such a great place to live and you may already know this. You will not regret living there and the commute is not that bad of one especially when someone else is doing the driving
