It depends if you need to comute to Boston on a daily basis, which of the towns would be best for you. I love Cohasset as I spent all of my summers there growing up. My mother was raised there and that's where my grand parents lived. It is a lovely place with it's own beach. Housing is very expensive but it is much smaller community than Wellsley and some of the others you mentioned. Portsmouth is nice too and NH has fewer taxes than MA. My daughter lives about 10 miles from Portsmouth so we go there often. It has alot to offer without being right in the busy Boston area.

Default Newburyport

I am also moving to the Boston area next spring, and had the opportunity to spend 3 months in Newburyport this past summer. My husband commuted into Boston, and took the rail. It took him 1hr 5min to take the train from Newburyport to the North station (plus the walk form there). There are also busses that can be faster to the city if you are not going at peak rush hour. We absolutely loved Newburyport, it has a very quaint feel (although it did get a bit touristy during certain parts of summer) and is on the water with beaches nearby. There is a great downtown with cute shops and restaurants and they have the most wonderful park for children (we have a young child too). We drove through Ipswich several times, and it is just beautiful too. For us, these towns are a bit too far from Boston, but if the commute time is not an issue for your family, then I would consider both. Good luck!
