I'm a 25 yo single female looking for advice on towns to rent in around the Merrimack Valley / North Shore/general area North of Boston. I'm living abroad right now but I plan on moving back to MA in September and I'm looking for advice on some good places to live.

I grew up in Dracut, MA but I'm looking to get out of there. I previously lived in Somerville (Davis Square) which I liked but it was a little too much for me. The Boston area was just too big and there were too many people. I also want to be able to use and park my car without having to move it every day for street sweeping, etc.

I would like a nice downtown area with things to do (restaurants, bars, cafes) but not too many things. I like having places to frequent and kind of become a local. I'm past the crazy college days but I'm also not ready to be entirely surrounded by families.

I enjoy running so access to trails or a park is important.

Ideally I would love to live near the coast. I don't have to see it but knowing it's there and being able to smell the ocean really makes me happiness. I guess I could enjoy a big lake, too!

That being said, preferably nothing outrageously expensive. I know the North Shore is pricey but does anyone know how much pricier than more inland areas or maybe southern NH?

I would also love to be surrounded by history. I don't think this is too hard in New England but thought it was good to add!

You may be wondering what I'm doing for work... I am getting my master's now so I'll be starting the job search soon but I'll be searching roughly in the area I've described. The logistics of budget, how big of an apt, etc will all be worked out after I get a job but right now I'm just looking for opinions of areas!

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Salem would be a good choice for you. Good downtown area, near the ocean, and on the commuter rail if you end up getting a job in Boston proper.
