Default Property Taxes in Massachusetts

[SIZE=2]I've often heard that the property taxes in MA are extremely high. Can anyone give some examples of what an annual tax bill would be for a couple different types of properties/locations?

In Baltimore City, the tax rate is over $2 for every $100 of assessed value. But the assessed values are often close to market value. So the taxes on a new $500,000 home can be over $10,000 annually. How does MA compare to this?

Default depends greatly....

on the county, town, and dwelling. A 900 sq. ft condo in Essex County is around $2500/year valued at $250K.

A 1600 sq. ft. single family home is $4900 in Middlesex.

It really depends on the town, but for the most part, MA property taxes seem to be lower than many neighboring states.

Hope that helps!

our house in Cambridge was assessed at just over 600k and we paid about 3k/yr in property taxes and got amazing services like free trash and recycle, good parks, good schools--people don't realize what a great urban system CPS is--and great services

Thanks so much for the information. After doing some more investigating, I found that Maryland's rate is listed as "per $100 of assessed value" while Massachusetts' rate is "per $1,000 of assessed value". So when you compare apples to apples, Baltimore City's tax rate is almost twice as high as Boston's. This is unbelievable, considering the services and benefits to which Septimus refers.

My home is assessed at about $400K here on the Cape (Bourne, 4 beds, 2 bath) and our taxes run about $2500 annually. Schools are good, curbside trash and recycle, new community and senior center, 5 year old middle school, new elementary underway, athletic fields being redone.

Please bear in mind that home property tax is only one way for a town or city to get revenue. If you have a big tourism or commercial industry, it can relief home property tax.

In my town, a house assessed at $350,000 has a property tax of around $3000. As smarty mentioned it really depends on your town.

Septimus said that in MASS. a property valued or assessed around 600 thous. is taxed at 3k a year??? Well that's awesome in my book because my home right now is assessed in New Hampshire at close to 300,000 and I'm paying 4000 a year, so if I were in your shoes? I'd keep looking in Mass. for a condo or a home! That's one area where Mass. isn't bad at all, plus you're getting a lot more for that property tax to go with it to boot!
