My math skills are just fine and I'm living in Newton. But I drive a car that is long paid for and don't have a smartphone. There are many ways to maximize on ones income. And I know more than a few people who make less than $33K and live right in the Boston Metro area.

You are on the right track, no one should spend much more that 25% of their income on rent.

Well, to be fair, many many people in expensive metro areas like eastern Mass./Boston pay way more than 25 percent of income for housing, be it rental, or mortgage.

I agree there is no reason to start bashing anyone. The cape is nice and perfectly safe, though I'm willing to bet you can find cheaper places to live with more job opportunities. You may want to focus your search on a specific area based on what you do for work. It's incredible hard to find a job (especially one that isn't high up) from out of state. Do you work for a company where you could potentially transfer? If not you should at the very least take into account whether there are opportunities nearby. I don't know what gas prices are out west, but we are paying 3.80ish here so how far you are from work could significantly impact your budget.

And many if not most of them have huge credit card balances, lack savings, are underinsured, are one breakdown/home repair/illness away from a catastrophe. They will never catch up, never mind get ahead.

Did not say all of the Providence Metro, I gave 2 examples of cities which are attracting the wrong transplants and of which to generally avoid. If you want me to be more specific, then let me know.
