It was just announced there will be train service from Boston to Cape Cod this summer. The cost will be $30 round trip and the train will make one round trip run on Saturdays and 2 on Sundays.

Love the idea.

It's not for families. $30 each adds up fast for a family of four, and where do you put all of the luggage/beach gear? Not to mention, how do you get from the train station to the vacation home?

Still, it's perfect for single travelers meeting people on the Cape or the Islands for the weekend. I would have used it all the time while I was living in Boston. Throw the bike in (there's a space for bikes), and avoid rush hour traffic in/around Boston and heading to the Cape? Also, rumor has it that there will be a cash bar (sort of like some of the ferries have). So I can pay $30 to avoid traffic, relax with a drink (or two) and get to Cape Cod after work as fast as (faster, even) as I could by sitting and traffic and driving? Sold.

Only goes to Hyannis, though. Not as good if you're an Outer Cape fan.

Anyone feel their will be a commuter rail extension into Cape Cod within the next 50 years?

^Maybe, but not likely. I think you'll see restored Amtrak service from NYC to Cape Cod (this has recently been discussed and is being studied as we speak) before you see Boston-Cape Cod commuter rail. There's a laundry list of local MBTA priority projects that will happen first (South Coast Rail, Green Line to Somerville, Blue Line to Lynn, North/South Rail Link, Red/Blue Line connector, Urban Ring, conversion of Silverline to Light Rail, South Coast Rail extension to Newport, Rail to Manchester and Portsmouth, etc.).

A seasonal tourist train is one thing. Regular commuter service is another.
