If you are planning to move here and have dogs pleaase reconsider.

FYI: I was just told by the animal control officer Charles Lewis that "DOGS CANNOT BARK" if they live in Barnstable and that is a quote too. Does anybody elses dogs bark? Mine do. I am suppose to keep dogs in at all times when not home to prevent a bark so not to disturb the neighbors.I get keeping the dogs in at night between certain hours. It is no wonder nobody wants to live here year round. Which is too bad because it is such a beautiful place. Birds chirp too sometimes annoyingly loud. Is there a law against bird chirping?

I have two dogs myself. I have an enclosed yard with a 6 feet privacy fence around it built specifically to help keep my pooches safe and secure. My dogs do go out and play in the yad when the weather is fine. But I would never keep them out for any extended period of time (like say during the day when I am at work). I know they bark, and it is only polite and considerate for the neighbors to not have to hear them. How is this bad?

I live in Newton and never keep my dogs in the yard unattended by me. And if they bark, I shush them. Sometimes the neighbor's dog is let out at the same time and causes all of them to bark, then I immediately bring mine inside.

It's called being considerate of ones neighbors. Dogs bark for many reasons including boredom. Maybe you should consider getting your dogs no-bark collars.

And yes, bird chirping can be loud, but they are wildlife native to the land. Domestic dogs and humans are not.

Amen!

Been a dog owner all my life. Rescue dogs.

You can train the dogs not to bark. Really simple. Just say no.

Most people prefer quiet enjoyment of their home. Dogs barking all of the time is a nuisance.

During the day and evening, when my dog goes out in the yard and ends up barking (at a squirrel, at a leaf, at the wind, etc...), I just call him inside because I don't want to be a pest to my neighbors.

Early in the morning and at night, though, I don't even want that one or two barks to disturb my neighbors, so I got my furry guy a citronella collar. He barks once, it sprays, he stops. After a day, he realized, "Oh. That collar is on me. No barking allowed." It's magic.

I would move to Barnstable but it would be cheaper to lobby this in my own town.

So, you didn't get the validation from this board that you were expecting, eh?

Responsible dog owners realize that a dog when left alone might bark constantly, from the time you leave until you return. Leaving dogs outside and subjecting your neighbors to their contant barking is not the mark of a friendly neighbor. If you're not home your dogs should either be with you, or inside. Otherwise you should move to a rural area where your dogs can roam free among your isolated 50 acres.

Why should your neighbors have to listen to barking dogs all day,if your not home you have no idea how long they bark for. Some people work odd hours and have to sleep during the day, I don`t think you would like it if your neighbors dog barked at night when you were trying to sleep. Bottom line if your not home keep your dogs in

I wish places I have lived had that law. When I was a home owner, I had neighbors with dogs on my side and directly across the street, both of them with multiple toy dogs that have the loud, squeaky, annoying barks. These people would put their dogs outside at 8am and not bring them in until 9pm or later, and they would bark all day long. I mean, all... day... long...

I am a tolerant person, however it got to the point that I called animal control several times and all they said was "sorry, we really can't do anything if the animal isn't being abused". I would have paid large amounts of money for a law like that just for the simple fact that it would have brought me peace. Mind you, at that time I had a German Shepherd and he loved to bark, however being a considerate person I didn't leave him outside unattended and I made sure to step in if he started barking excessively. I personally feel if you are going to own a dog you need to be responsible for all aspects of the animal, including doing all in your power to control their barking and not letting them be a nuisance to those around you.
