I know it probably sounds ignorant and believe me I tried to do my research...but what do the big stars mean on the houses? We moved up here from NJ which is pretty "northeastern" and I have never seen one there. I asked the salesman in the hardware store who sells them and he said they are just decoration. Somehow they look too patriotic for that. The Real Estate agent did not know either, same with the www. And do they have different color meanings? Are they for veterans? If so I might be able to get one for my husband. ;-) Thanks for letting us know. And it is cool to finally start a (hopefully) meaningful topic on here.

You know, it's funny you should ask that. I was wondering the exact same thing. I asked a few people over the summer about them and they all said the same thing, that they're just decorative stars, all different sizes and colors to hang indoors or outdoors, or anywhere you choose to hang them. You definitely see them every where now more and more!
If any one else out there knows a different story with them, could you please clue us in, if you would? Thank you! ![]() |

I haven't noticed any big stars on houses, but now I will have to go look. I saw a large five pointed star hanging on a fence near Hudson, NY and immediately thought it was from an old Texaco gas station! Yes, I am old and I would love a Texaco star for myself.

There Barn Stars, been around since the 1700's, originated from German farmers in Penn. Today on homes and sheds, they mean good luck and good fortune.

They are called "Barn Stars", I guess they originated on barns, maybe. You see them in gift shops. People buy them in the colors they think will look nice on their house, it seems.

OHHH, so that's where they came from! Well, thank you very much for clueing us in to this huge fad we have on our hands around here! Now that certainly makes sense with all of them! I really like the fact that they're for good luck and good fortune too!

Amazing...I did not know this and I am German myself. I did a little more "research" and googled it in German, where I did not find much. It seems like that the German immigrants developed these symbols after coming to the US. Also the area in Germany where I grew up was Lutheran and the Pennsylvania Dutch (from Deutsch, not to be confused with the Holland Dutch-although related) where from the Rhine region and more conservative. They might have had the stars there and the next time I travel in that region I have to pay more attention to the farms.
Thank you for teaching us something new! |

It means they were on sale at Christmas Tree Shops or Job Lot.

Honestly, I think it's the dumbest fad to come in a while. I've seen them inside, outside, large, small, and an array of colors. I just don't see the appeal. Boring.
