Fishing?
My husband would like to know if there are any good lakes or ponds to go fishing near Newton. He would like to get a kayak to do this and was wondering where the best spots to launch a kayak to fish may be? How about beaches too while we are at it? Thanks.

There is the Charles River for kayaking in and I do see some people fishing in the river. There are boat rental places along Soldiers Field Road and also near the Marriott Hotel in Newton by Rte. 30 and Rte. 128. Of course, you can't eat the fresh water fish around here. I have friends that fish at night along the ocean and the coast will have the best beaches. However, people do go swimming in Crystal Lake in Newton.
There are also deep sea fishing boats that leave the Gloucester area.

Here's a list of the lakes/ponds that are stocked around Newton, Massachusetts Trout Stocked Waters Apparently, Crystal Lake has trout. The Boston Globe also has info on fishing and local updates.

He's not going to find a lot of good fresh water fishing in this area. There are kayak and canoe launches in various places along the Charles and Neponset rivers, but the fishing isn't too good. I'd guess the nearest big body of fresh water that might offer decent fishing is Lake Cochituate in Natick.
He'll find more people fish in the ocean, either from a beach or on one of the deep sea fishing excursions in the area.
As for beaches, you do have the one lake in Newton, and there are a few other fresh water beaches in the area, such as Lake Cochituate and Walden Pond. As for ocean beaches, that's a long post with many different opinions from the locals.

Again though, you can't eat any freshwater fish caught in MA due to high mercury levels.

Also on some of the lakes like Quinsigamond in Worcester and also Maspenock in Hopkinton it's better to fish in the fall and early mornings in the summer when the jet skiers aren't out in droves. Hard to fish with all that darn noise. I believe they are not allowed at Lake Cochituate, although I don't know what the fishing is like there.
