My husband and I just accepted jobs in Milton, MA. We're looking for homes in the surrounding area. No more than 300k, a place with good schools, and a nice downtown. Any suggestions, I'm concerned about the low budget.

Me too. Homes around $300k in our area generally aren't in those picturesque, prototypical New England towns, with good schools to boot. How small can you go?

Homes around Milton for $300K? Try $600K, you might find something decent.

Usually good schools and <300K houses don't go together. Why are you looking for a house.... if you don't have the budget, why not rent until you can afford?

Look toward Franklin and Wrentham areas. Both towns are very nice and might have lower prices than Milton.

I know we can't afford Milton, I was hope for more affordable towns in the area (no more than a 25 minute commute) that might fit our price range. Based on our salaries, we're working at a local university, we won't be able to afford much more. I townhouse would be okay as well.

I grew up in this area and you might want to look at towns south and southwest of Milton, like as someone mentioned Wrentham, Franklin, even Milville and Blackstone, which are a little beyond Franklin....they are pretty nice, quiet towns and houses are much cheaper than in Milton or the communities immediately surrounding Boston. The T commuter rail goes from Back Bay in Boston out to Franklin so even living out there you would not necessarily need to drive in each day. Traffic along I-95 and 128 heading into Boston, etc is pretty bad weekdays so the train can be a nice option.

You might find something in your price range in Quincy. Bonus -- you won't have much of a commute.
