Look in Ipswich, which is on the commuter line, and has a quaint downtown, along with lovely beaches. Typically must choose between charming house and charming yard. And can definitely find a historic home in Ipswich, which has the most First Period (built between 1650 - 1725) homes of any town in the nation.

Ipswich is also more "small town USA" than Haverhill or Amesbury, while being much more affordable than Hamilton-Wenham or Boxford.
