Arpeggio cafe in South Boston makes their own ice cream, but I think it's made in their Fall River/New Bedford store then trucked up here.

Not sure how often the product in Southie turns over, but I think it was a Dutch Chocolate flavor I enjoyed. They have food other than ice cream, but kind of a cool little neighborhood spot without beng terribly yuppie (yuppie...which I actually like most times).

I like the Calleaut chocolate at Rancatore's, now in Belmont Center, having moved from years at another Belmont store. That's a nice Belgian (?) flavor not seen in most shops. I think that name is from the days when Steve's ice cream started (or is it a link to Toscannini's?). Whatever, but it's an important local ice cream guy from days gone by...

Kimball Farm is my favorite. I usually go to the Carlisle location since it's closer.

I like their homemade whipped cream also. I sense their coffee is also good.

Gee, I first stepped inside there in 1982!

I like Crescent Ridge in Sharon also as well as Farfar's in Duxbury as mentioned earlier..

PICO (Pizza Ice Cream Company) in the South End is hip and trendy, and has a few flavors of ice cream made there. I like the mint chocolate chip. Considered the best pizza in the state by USA Today a couple years ago ;they tend to overcook it on purpose.
Couldn't resist this 'Do they make pizza ice cream too?'
I should mention Hodgies in Amesbury. If you order a medium,
not only is it very good it's like getting a half gallon on a stick.
Reasonably priced, too.

These are my two favorite places. Can't go wrong with either. PICCO in the South End is pretty good as well and often has some pretty creative flavors plus great food as well. Toscannini's is good as well. I haven't been in years but they used to have a micro sundae on their menu which was actually a reasonable size for a single person.

Ice CreamSmith in Lower Mills in Dorchester is closed over the winter, but its ice cream is reportedly made on site. Small, but I like the village feel of the area near Milton.

I second Nona's in Hingham, though I can't say that I've visited many of the others mentioned - I'm tempted!

I liked Down River, but I thought they were a bit expensive.
