Um, well, actually the Big 10 is still the Big 10 (though there are now 11 schools in the conference, since Penn State joined a number of years ago; they must have kept the name out of a sense of tradition), and has nothing to do with the Big 12. The Big 12 is made up of a number of schools that used to be members of the old Big Eight and Southwestern Conferences.

I stand corrected.
But I'm still a fan of the Pac 10.

Fair enough. Of course, this does point up something some people from MA might miss if they moved somewhere else, namely, the passion for professional sports. After growing up in a suburb of Boston, I lived in Ohio for a number of years. People there follow the pro teams in Cleveland and Cincinnati with plenty of interest, but THE favorite team--Ohio's equivalent of the Sox in MA--is Ohio State's football team. Having grown up in an area where college sports aren't a big deal for the most part, I always thought the statewide passion for a college team seemed a little funny. I don't judge it, and I disagree with the idea, which I think was expressed above, that schools with big-time sports programs can't also be fine institutions academically, but it always felt a little funny. One of those small differences that all add up to make one place feel more like home than another.

My husband prefers college sports to pros. But he grew up on the West Coast. You're right though. People here in Boston have elevated fandom to an art.

Do I miss Mass? Hell ya. I left Mass when I was 14 yrs old and you know what? You never know how you good you have it until it's gone. Granted I never paid the dreaded taxes that plaque Mass...but instead I deal with housing rates that are through the roof...crappy drivers (that aren't even amusing...they just can't drive)...people who have no clue what sarcasm is and just get offended when you use it. I live in South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area)...I, like everybody else in this state just about, can't wait to get out. As for New Englanders not being friendly..who cares? I live where people get offended if you don't acknowledge them and ya know what? It's really annoying. I plan to move back to Mass and frankly looking at the housing market there...its not too bad. Come to Florida and deal with Spanish 24/7..creole/patwa/hindu and every other nationality that you can think, but only wants to speak with you in their language and gets mad when you can't. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Mass people may look like they all hate each other, but they always seek each other out in different states. I personally can't wait to get back to my beloved state of Massachusetts.

Yes, I miss Boston quite a bit. It was an amazing place when I was young and single. My wife and I are both teachers and we moved south and now we are better able to provide for our children.

I lived in Holliston and Framingham, MA from 1986-2003 and I still have a sister who lives in Weston, MA... I finally moved back to my home state of Texas and I can tell you this.... I DO NOT MISS THE DAMN WINTERS!!! The poster who said that the winters are killing them as they get older is DEAD ON! Since I've escaped MA and NE, my blood pressure has also gone down (can't say anything about weight b/c I eat my tex-mex and great BBQ!!)
I do miss the autumn mornings and drinking my DD coffee and the crisp air... but let me tell you, I will only visit in the months of Sept. to early Nov. and I will never LIVE there again!

I agree 100%. I am in NC now but will move back to Mass in a couple years. We miss WAY too much to stay away. The food...clams, etc......Even tho we detest the winters......Oh well.. The yahoos here are unbearable,
