Default Well I miss home!!!

Well...I miss home. Born and raised on North Cambridge. Lived in Malden for 10 yrs, rarley drove the car, used the T to get everywhere. I moved to Socal, or San Diego 7 yrs ago! Great weather, but it lacks any culture at all.....Everything is cookie cutter malls and that all the same food. They have no good pizza, Chinese food and no Delis!!!...Mom and Pop places are few and far between....oh wait this is...what I about Mass....well thats a start. I know my home town and the surounding areas....But I'm a better Bostonian now that I left. I miss the attitude, yes it is negative, but that helps with the high points in life.

I miss the areas that I grew up in, knowing who your nieghbor is and the donut place in N.C.....the my grandfather would bring me too....its still there!! Now where do I bring my young girls???...Sorry about the lack of details, it's hard to explain, but it's a feeling. I miss home in my chest....the 4 seasons, the Boston common. The fact that you can catch 3 out of 4 sports teams around Boston proper...just takew the T, see the Celts, Bruins or head to Kenmore and look at Fenway...(ya depending on what time of year!)

I miss The Northend...little Italian ladies speaking in native tongue!! My wife and I miss those large plates of pasta, then buying some fruit and walking around and to the New England Aquirium. I miss China-Town, but who knows what its like after 7 yrs!!! but the food!!! Well you have to eat there. I miss the fact that in Cambridge any sqaure you stop at, theres a little culture there, from bars, food or used book stores!!! Never mind the mixed community!!! People I mean....I miss Davis square!!...Harvard square, well take it or leave that place, it sold out yrs ago.

Well with a 5 and 7 yr old, I wan to move back. So now the wife and I are looking into good schools and affordable housing.....Thats not easy. It's very expensive in Socal....1300 hundred for a 2 bedroom apartment.

Ok thats it...hope you get what you get from my babble...lol.

However, the weather here can't be beat. Interracial relationships are much easier. People really are friendlier...you always say "hi" to everyone. And everyone makes eye contact. But the jobs are all low paying, part-time or temporary. The cost of living is out of control. Development is rampant.
I'm looking forward to being back among the ambitious and intelligent.
I grew up in northern CT. The wife and I moved to FL (Tampa area), but we love to hike, missed the seasons, the variety of places to go and I'm into landscape photography so we moved to Western Mass (Northampton area). I love it from April to October, but the Winters are grey and depressing.

The housing was so much better in FL. For 400k here I get an old house that needs work!! Also, the people in FL were much friendlier. If I was old enough I think I'd be a snow-bird .

Funny, in FL the idea was to develop everything, but everyone is so anti-development here. Unfortunately, that's one of the reasosn why our taxes are so high here - there is no corporate tax base!! I would love to see a bit more development here, but most people are adamantly against it!

Thus, moving back has been a mixed bag. Somtimes I think about moving somewhere in between, like Virginia.

Do I miss MA..... NO !

I lived in MA for 15 years (grew up in NYC and my wife was born and raised in MA), and while New England is a beautiful place, I don't miss the NIMBY, provincial, small town thinking, nor do I miss the looney leftist politics. Only in Massachusetts (well maybe RI or NY) could Kerry, Kennedy, and Barney Frank get elected. I also don't miss the winters that start in November and end in April.

I wonder if many of the folks who've commented on the south and other areas outside of New England have ever been to those places? Secret...most other parts of the country think MA is a joke and wonder how anyone could ever live there.

EDIT: I do miss the Sox and Pats. New England sports fans are the best. That much is fact.

good post neil.

When I have travelled around this country and got talking about massachusetts I hardly ever meet anyone who likes the state , a lot would rather see the state just cut off from the country. No where else could those elected and what they have done still keep getting elected.'shame as there are some decent folk around there especially the older ones

I lived there for a few years and thankfully I got out, hated the looney politics couldn't stand the driving, traffic, the potholes, the media and how it is so biased, pollution, rudeness, the class bigotry where many think they are better than others, might be the colleges around and some people what go to them, the stupid laws, the rudeness and people driving giving the finger yet wouldn;t dare to do it if they were face to face with you.. all the yuppies moving into southie, north end and how they have ruined the areas. yuppies wondering around wearing their latest chav burberry, women in the mids with their false plastics on their body. the stereotyping of the south yet theyhave never lived there, I've heard some say the standered of living is better there, well not in my case it isn't, the high cost keeps you from going on vacation, buying the finer things for your family, the cost of heating takes a load of money out of the pocket. the violence is up with shootings yet the mayor still does the same thing and says they will buy back the weapons, well mayor it's not working, criminals won't sell you their uzi will they
schools are laying off teachers, cutting back on programmes yet taxes still go up and up.unemloyment above the national average etc, not even safe to go to a rest area, not safe to go to blue hills for a walk infact they have had to close the place at nights now, the state has really changed

I've read how some have said that it's not rudeness it';s just that people are not as talkative about general chit chat , well just how hard is it to say thank you , how hard is it to let someone go before you in traffic , at an intersection, how hard can it be not to give a finger or keep honking the horn yet the same cowards who do it would never do it to your face, how hard is it to hold a door for someone or stand up for a pregnant woman on the train. How hard is it not to tailgate.
the fact is it's rudeness no matter how it is justified.
to have read some of these posts and there are some there and even on here who see what the state has become but I do wonder how long was it that some of you actually went back as the state has really changed .
My wife was born and bred there and she can't believe just how much it's changed for the worse. Not even going to say what I have heard some call massachusetts now

do we miss it , absolutly no way . I've lived around the world and massachusetts is the worst place I have ever lived.

It says somethng about a state when it's the only one what has lost it's native population for the last 4 years in a row, 60,000 people just last year moved out of boston, still if that keeps up one of those elected will be losing their seat in govt .

was a good state not the best but it was alright but sadly no more

As there are many things that demand our attention, it was because of a notice I've received from the board that there were comments on the post I've made, that made me look back again.

So glad I did. Look at the diversity of the people who commented and we are all at different places, 'been there, done that' and for most of us the common thread is our love for Massachusetts or more particularly Boston. Yes, it is a different Boston than it was in the 60's - but, hey - I'm a different girl from the one I was in the 60's so it works out.

I'm still in Budapest - there had been a cold spel, but an unexpected pleasant surprise of a snowy drizzle. It is pleasant for me as I'm inside by the fire looking out (been on vacation for almost 2 weeks) and am about to take a nap. I love the fact that I have to luxury to do nothing and yet it allows me time to reflect, ruffle the fur of my cats..... Already had a glass of champagne with pomegranate juice and some wonderful shrimp/mushroom/broccoli/rice dish for lunch. Time to take a nap so I'll be able to stay up for midnight (the past two years I fell asleep only to wake a few minutes after midnight - well, what good is that!?

Hugs to all of you my gentle virtual friends! Life is good and I am so grateful for everything I have and have experienced. God is great! Happy New Year to all of you!!

Not to burst your bubble but what I won't miss about MA when I leave will be my HEATING BILLS! I just filled my tank again which I have now spent $1,245.00 in oil this winter and it's still December .... and I am freezing with the heat set LOW! I read on Forbe's website that Boston has the highest cost for winter heating than any other city in the US!

I am sorry but I am getting too old to work my tail off for taxes, oil and gas. It's not making me feel very inspired, creative or peaceful.
