I briefly knew a young woman from Whitman who moved into my area for a few years with her son then she moved back there. I think it's easier to move away from family when you are fresh out of college. Now my parents are elderly and moving now is much more difficult ... but not impossible.

That's interesting. Here I am on the other end of the spectrum. I'm the elderly one (well 66) and have trouble with the idea of moving "home" because of my grown children (and grandchildren). I have one local son who has expressed that he would prefer I stay right here in DeLand, however, if Whitman is what would make me happy, then go for it!!!! That didn't help. I went to MA 3 times in 2007 and will be going back in 2008 as many times as I can afford. Oh, I failed to mention that I'm a widow and have noone in my household but me. Wish I could be one of those 6 here and 6 there kind of people.

Stop wishing and find a way to make it happen ... or at least die while trying ... You've heard the saying, "NEVER GIVE UP!"
And GEEEEZZZZ, 66 elderly? I hesitated when I called my parents elderly and they are in their eighties!

You're right! Believe me, I'm not going to give up!! I know there's got to be a way....just need to find it. For now, I just keep playing the Lottery. Thanks for listening and thanks for thinking of me as not that old!!!!! Do you think you'll ever move back?

We are working on coming back right now!!!
My husband grew up in Western Mass. and I grew up in NH. We have lived in both states as well as Colorado (Boulder area) and now in Washington state (Spokane area).
We lived outside of Worcester (Rutland) so I can't comment on the people in Boston, but we encountered the friendliest, most welcoming people in Mass. We feel that New England is very friendly overall and people don't shun you because you're not a bible-thumping fundamentalist (like here in Spokane). We've noticed that people in Mass. have much more fun. Out here in Spokane the biggest social activity is bible study. No offense, but that makes those of us who are not overly religious feel very excluded.
I miss the way Mass. takes great care of the roads. Out here they don't even plow, they just wait for vehicles to wear the snow off the road (this leads to a layer of ice). I miss Boston being close by. Where we are it takes 5 hours to get to Seattle. I miss real maple syrup. I miss Dunkin' Donuts. I miss hiking in the White Mountains.
Sorry if this post has become a rant against where I currently am, but to answer the original post, yes, I miss Massachusetts. I couldn't truly appreciate it until I spent time out west and realized how hard it is to be in a bible belt.

Oh I haven't left yet But I more see myself doing the 6 here 6 there. My biggest problem is being a single Mom and my daughter is still in school and also that I am having a hard time selling my houses.
But if I don't make my goal .... I'll die trying!!!

I was a single Mom at one time, too! Married several times and finally found the right man...........now a widow...........go figure! I miss him. He was great........gone only two years. Great that you have "houses", I only have one small. That could, however, turn out to be a bless in disquise (sp?).
Anyway, I "AM" going to figure out a way to get back to Whitman, even if it's just for the six month thing. Or, like you, will die trying!!!! I love MA, and I love everything about it....even some of the negative things I've read here make me want to go back.............now how crazy is that!!?? SO, if I come up with any bright ideas, I'll share. Hopefully, you may do the same.
One thing I am thinking of doing. I've subscribed to my hometown paper recently, and am considering on putting an article in it with a little about my growing up there, and see if there is "anyone" who might consider renting (at a price I can afford....being that I'm on a fixed income) to me for a few months a year..........I don't even care if it's only a room that they might rent. I would take what I can get!!!!!!

Try craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums they have temporary house listing in the surrounding and boston area. Would you even consider house sitting? House sitting for free might get you there. Here's a line to put on Craigslist, "I MISS MASSACHUSETTS SO MUCH I AM WILLING TO HOUSE SIT FOR FREE! I HAVE EXCELLENT LOCAL REFERENCES." I bet it works!!! Good luck.

I grew up in MA, living on the South Shore and Cape Cod, and I would never move back there. I took a new job in September and have been traveling for my job and will end up living somewhere other than MA. I lived in Santa Barbara for a while, which is much more expenive than any other town in MA, and I would return there in a heartbeat. I simply don't like the people or the weather in the Northeast. I'm an AZ right now and it's 10 times better here.
