I grew up in a little town called, Whitman (home of the Toll House Cookie). I loved it!!!!!!!!!! Moved to Florida in 1970 (DeLand) and have been here ever since. I think about Whitman a lot and miss all of the same things I've read on these posts. It seems, at least for some of us, MA living is in our blood. I've wanted to move back since the day I left, and that feeling has never gone away. It would be a challange for me to be able to afford to move back plus 4 of my grown children live in FL (and some of my grandchildren). One son lives in Ohio (the only one who was born in Florida). The others were born in Brockton, MA. I'm going to keep reading this site because it's so great to know that there are a lot of people out there who feel the same way I do. Thanks.

Did you know the "Toll House" burnt down, carolynrick? If I remember correctly, it's a Wendy's now! Sad to see.

I lived mostly in the Worcester area (Oxford, W. Boylston, Rutland), then in Palmer before we moved to Texas five years ago.
It may be alot warmer out here and no snow, but I do miss Massachusetts alot...especially the changing seasons and the beautiful Fall colors.

Having said that, as an middle aged adult paying taxes, raising and educating 3 kids, and concerned about politics and the future, I wouldn't want to live in NYC today and we recently made the choice to leave MA. You don't realize what you've missed (or what you had that you don't want) until you make a change.

That's interesting! I lived in Massachusetts for 25 years (Boston area) as a young adult and adult and now live in Queens, NY. I grew up on Long Island. I find Queens not to match what Boston has: Boston is amazing in all there is to offer and far more lovely than NYC, don't you think?

Other than the fact that I think I could do the San Francisco climate, I do prefer New England over all other places. Gee, I love the cold winters, as they are a real challenge and then give over to gorgeous springs, lovely summers (well, I lived near the Atlantic, what can I say?) and the magnificent fall colors.
And this allows for beautiful woods and landscapes, sharp clear skies, etc.

To each his own. I lived in MA for a long time and I would never want to return other than to visit, and I would do that sparingly. The weather is terrible and the people are not friendly. I couldn't wait to leave and I'm glad I did. Certain people are happy in certain places (even New England). I don't see how New England is beautiful at all. I think the West Coast and Southeast are far prettier and a have a better quality of life than anywhere in New England.

Anyway, I "AM" going to figure out a way to get back to Whitman, even if it's just for the six month thing. Or, like you, will die trying!!!! I love MA, and I love everything about it....even some of the negative things I've read here make me want to go back.............now how crazy is that!!?? SO, if I come up with any bright ideas, I'll share. Hopefully, you may do the same.
One thing I am thinking of doing. I've subscribed to my hometown paper recently, and am considering on putting an article in it with a little about my growing up there, and see if there is "anyone" who might consider renting (at a price I can afford....being that I'm on a fixed income) to me for a few months a year..........I don't even care if it's only a room that they might rent. I would take what I can get!!!!!!

Hi Carolyn,
I have a sister who lives in Abington, right next to Whitman. She is looking to do the six month thing also...but just the opposite..coming here to Florida for six months. She wants to be close to me and my son though and we live in Tampa. Deland is too far. If you have any friends/family in the Tampa area who could accommadate my sister in exchange for you staying in her house in Abington that could work out!
Perhaps she would consider renting out her house to you short term if you didn't have a swap for her. Or maybe a room while she is there, I will tell her about your plight. It is a two bedroom home and just she lives there.
My brother and sister in law moved to Clearwater, Fl from Whitman a couple years ago. They lived in Whitman for aprx. 15 years. We are all from Rockland,
Ma. originally.
My parents had a home in the late eightees right near you in Deltona Fl.......
Well have a good night! Hopefully this can be a win-win situation. It would be
great to be able to help you out...

I live in the greater Boston area. Went on a business trip to San Diego and everybody there told me they'd move to Boston in a heartbeat. I'm one to say I'd move to SD- just say the word and I'm there. But the biggest complaint I heard from everybody - including the taxi driver- is that they long for more culture and history. One woman from Romania told me she had a friend from Romania who visited Boston and went back and told her it was just like Europe and then moved to Boston shortly thereafter.
