OMG, you too? I am so fed up with NoVa I could scream. We're 5 miles from what we affectionately term the "Nations Crapitol". After 35+ years of living there, I can speak from experience and the "Washington mentality" does not come from Washington. The people I know who grew up near DC aren't half bad. Its the ones who come here from South and West -- the most paranoid, self-centered, vapid bunch of bigots I've ever seen. And it's not just the whites who are bigots, the reverse discrimination in Maryland is horrible! At least in Mass people will tell you to your face if they think you're a jerk. In the DC area they will tell everyone else around you and then you find you're totally alienated and don't know why because you "didn't get the memo".
Every time we have visited Mass, we have found the plain-spokenness to be a breath of fresh air. Life it too short to spend time finding ways to incorporate "sweetness and light" into everything you say. Besides, everyone knows too many sweets will make you sick!

I totally agree with that. We live in a county that is predominantely black, many times we go into a store and are treated rudely or ignored. If you hold the door for people they rarely even acknowledge you, let alone say "thanks" (something I ALWAYS do). Etc. etc. When we moved here I never gave the racial make up of this area a second thought, but after living here for many years, I am just fed up. Sad, but true.
I don't need phony friendliness, but I don't like plain rudeness. I have spent a few weeks in MA and met lots of very nice people, looking forward to getting out of here and moving up there, yeah!!!
Oh and the taxes here are just about the same as MA....

I've lived in mass my whole life and let me tell you'll find the same thing here especially in the larger cities.

All I can say is that I have had a better experience in MA than here. Maybe Boston or other larger cities are different, but we are moving to small town (near Worcester) and the people seem friendly compared to here. When we were looking at our future house, we met a couple of people that were very friendly and talkative and helpful. Around here, people look the other way and ignore you.

I live in a small town now and i will say people are much friendlier even just this morning i stopped at my local convenience store and a woman held the door for me and said good morning. Where i grew up forget it that would NEVER have happened. You'll most likely experience rudeness in worcester.

May I suggest applying at Shriner's Hospital in Boston? They are a pediatric burn unit and they take patients from all over the world and here in the US. The Shrine system is a very special place and they embrace people of different cultures. They are a wonderful charity group and the kids always come first. They are nearly always looking for help as burn units are challenging to work for. Speaking a second language is usually a big plus when applying for them. I worked at the Springfield hospital and we had patients from Veitnam, China, Cyprus, Africa, the caribbean, South America and from many counties in Europe. I speak Spanish and some nights I spoke more spanish than english LOL! Did not pick up on Veitnamese tho..try as I did.
