I don't believe they're turning down proposals from Walmart because of ideology or a desire to protect downtown businesses.

There's a new hotel, a 99 Restaurant, and a big box Home Depot store that have all gone in at the Rte 2 rotary within the last few years.

The issue is where to locate a big box store, on what piece of commercial land. Greenfield is wet. There doesn't seem to be a location for another big box that complies with the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act.

Mayor Forgey's Economic Development Director, Marlene Morrocco, is facing formal censure for lying to the Town Council about a waiver from the state, none of which has anything to do with this thread which is Greenfield Schools "Dropout Factory" designation from the Mass DOE and John Hopkins.

There's enough money for the schools. The people of the town don't know what constitutes a good school.

You may want to check out New Rules Project - Designing Rules As If Community Matters there's an article on greenfield from 1991. There's a law they passed to keep wal mart out it's called the community impact assessment.

Did you even read it, wheelmann? There is no "law they passed to keep Walmart out."

Aside from it being a 17 year old article from 1991, it calls for a community impact assessment for projects over 20,000 square feet.

It means the zoning board, etc. will look to see if the proposed project is reasonable under the specific circumstances. That's a standard procedure in towns anywhere these days.

The important thing is working together as a community to improve these failing schools in Greenfield.

The school committee and mayor just announced there is some discrepancy in their budget and they're short $900,000.00.

Their solution? Close some schools and lay off teachers.

Please note my correct use of there, they're, and their. I didn't go to Greenfield schools.

The Town Council is trying to put the schools into state receivership but the mayor is having a fit and saying no way.

Loook greenfield is a s h i t t y place to live.. it JUST IS!! im not saying its worse than springfield or holyoke cuz we all KNO its NOT AS BIG, if it was it would b just as bad if not worse. northampton and amherst are much bigger cities but for some reason crime rates here in greenfield stay to be much higher in every way. Its NOT A REDNECK city either like i read in a previous post, i went to school there, i was minority in a few classes and i am a white male, i live near a project and on one of the said to be worse, and poorer neighborhoods in the city and ive seen alot of messed up stuff happen so i duno, JUST SAYING!! it sucks living here

I was born and raised in greenfield. I attended greenfield schools, franklin county technical school, gcc and moved to boston to attend college. I am a proud graduate of all of the above. Greenfield schools were good when i attended in 1970's, the tech school had it issues in the early 1980's by other district towns were dumping all there rift raft there but i have heard it has straighten its act out now. What can one say about gcc one of the best community colleges in the state. I loved it there. I can to boston for school and work. There are no jobs in greenfield.

When i visit now it is to see family. I see the people who walk the streets and wait at the bus stop at the common. If this is how greenfield resident present themselves then no wonder why things have gone down hill. Greenfield has always had a large number of subized housing in its town. With that comes a large number of poor children/special education students (the cost of educating a special needs student is so high and greenfield schools have the largest number in franklin) which brings down the number of children being able to pass mcas. The towns of weston and wellesly do not have a subized housing population to educated so there mcas scores are higher.

All i can say if you are an outsider and you move to this town. The chance you have of being elected mayor are nill. The people who have lived there their entire lives will not elected you. This happened in the last election with mayor forgery. As bad as she is now. She was the only one of the canidates that was not a transplant resident i believe.

If all the transplants, immgrants, illegals and subized housing residents from other towns in the commonwealth who can not housing in there towns moved out of greenfield then it would be a better place to live. Greenfield politics have been the same for years on how things are run. If you dont like greenfield move away from it. Franklin county is the poorest county in the state per capitail income on the mass gov page put out by the state.
