Here is a great solution if you like Hingham:

Hingham Apartments in South Shore | Avalon at the Hingham Shipyard

You could walk to the ferry and wouldn't have to pay for parking! There are also shops and some restaurants right there, including a Trader Joe's.

Would a drive to Braintree or Quincy Red line work better for the OP?

OP, I would check out North Quincy as an alternative to Hingham, especially the Marina Bay area. There are many of those more contemporary high rises in that area. Also look at South Boston in the newer renovations, since you aren't demanding much space and have a decent budget.

Do you have any personal experience with these apartments?

I don't have any first hand experience with those apts, but they look nice from the outside. We frequent the Shipyard area a lot. It has great variety of shops, restaurants, movie theater, etc including a Trader Joe's and Fresh Market - and everything is very new. There is actually even a dog park that you could walk to from there quite easily (Stodders Neck - right along the Back River, off leash and lots of room for running and swimming, we used to take our dogs there.) Could work out quite well!

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you have any comment on how alive/dead the area is at night?

I would just add that the whole Hingham Shipyard area is just a few years old and so I'm sure these apartments are pretty new and my experience with Avalon is that they do a good job keeping up their properties.

I do not, but I second what the other posters said that Avalon in general has a good reputation, and that they look nice and are new, and they are pet friendly. I shop at the Shipyard fairly often. I wouldn't say it's lively at night, but there are restaurants and a movie theater. And you're fairly close to other shops and amenities in Hingham. If you want a vibrant atmosphere, you'd have to go with Boston/Cambridge or some of the immediate areas, but it didn't sound like that was what you were looking for.

Where in the DC area did you live? I am from Maryland, lived in Baltimore, and worked in DC, so I might be able to help you compare areas.

That might work, but that is a 20-25 minute drive depending on where in Hingham, plus garage parking in Braintree or Quincy Adams is $7-8 per day, I believe. The subway would be crowded, but you wouldn't have to change trains, and it would be maybe a 35-40 minute ride.

If I'm looking at "total travel time"... driving doesn't score that UNFAVORABLY compared to the ferry/commuter rail/subway. I am fortunate that I have parking provided in my building at no cost (and no refund if I don't use it).
