My friends who live in Back Bay and the South End definitely feel like I live "far" from them though.
Let me say that 'far' means daily commute time then.

Since Needham and Newton are beside each other, then yes, depending on where you live in Needham and Newton, I agree both can seem to be similar. Especially since Newton traffic is frequently busy. Also, two places can seem close if one does not travel that same route on a daily basis or one travels outside of congested hours.

In the end, it's all about what you're used to. It's not really about physical distance or even traffic. It's a matter of personal perception.

There are many people in my office who commute into Boston from NH, RI and Central Mass (one guy has to drive 35 minutes just to hop the train from Worcester). Far is a relative term and it depends on what your priorities are. Also, purchasing a small shack for $600k inside 128 just isn't a possibility for most people. I think Needham would actually be relatively close to Boston compared to where the average employee in my office lives and Andover is about average.

Since we seem to be talking about commute times, I got curious and Googled around:

http://bostinno.streetwise.co/2013/0...ional-average/

I would say the average worker in my office has a shorter commute than that, but then again, the demographics is different from the mean, and my sample size is small, nowwhere near the 30 needed to justify a normal distribution.

I live in andover and like it. If i had a choice i would live in Newton. Needham seems to be doing much better than andover in RE. If you want a bigger house you can afford in andover than it is a great place to buy. It does not have much diversity but has great natural preserves, parks, trails, community programs for kids and the downtown is getting some excitement. Low crime. If you have any specific
questions, please ask.

I've never understood those "average commute time" studies. It makes me believe that at least 10% of the population in any given town must work for the town (5 minute commute) and another 50% must work in a neighboring town with a large employer (15 minute commute) in order to balance out the people who work in the Waltham-Cambridge-Boston corridor with 1+ hour commutes.

Andover school's are fantastic. The Town is pristine. You will always be able to sell your home. Needham is a 55 minute ride away. You will be ok.

12 miles from the hub and the bordering town to West Roxbury, I'd hardly call Needham far from Boston.

I see Andover and Needham as very similar. It comes down to commute and hobbies of the OP. Whereas Needham is closer to Boston, Andover is closer to the vacation and getaway spots of New Hampshire, Maine and the north shore. If work and hobbies are Boston-based then a move to Andover would make less sense.
