Essex is also really cool with all the antique stores. Beverly farm is also nice but the school system is pretty bad. If you like bigger pproperties then Boxford has a minimum of 2 acres and lots of trails for horseback riding. North Shore is really laid back and pretty year-round and much less congested than South Shore. You might want to also look into Bedford if you want to be in the Metro-West area. You dollar will stretch further if you choose North Shore communities. Good luck!
Why is Cranes Beach infamous? I've always thought it was very beautiful along w/the estate.

We're likely dealing with one of the Three Amigos here.

Seriously though, I think he just misused the word.

Infamous for those green heads. It is gorgeous but the green heads are really annoying!

Easy commute, super family friendly, great school system (most which are brand new)...Arlington. However, the whole town is only 5.5 square miles, so getting a acre is tough. We have plenty of parks, Mentomy Rocks, Spy Pond, I can see the river and Mystic lakes from my house! I grew up here with my 4 siblings, raising my 4 kids here. Plenty of bus routes, the bike path, you can walk to Alewife or Davis from East Arlington. Even the commuter rail in West Medford. My husband use to work in Kendell, he'd walk to Alewife from Linwood/Mass Ave down bike path and hope train he just said whole thing would take him no more than an hour.

Arlington is a great place to live, but it's very very dense especially on the east side. If the OP says they want an acre plus lot, I can't imagine they'll be too happy to live on the 0.12 to 0.14 acre lots that a lot of Arlington single families sit on.

Crane's Beach is justly famous for being beautiful, large (not just some sand near a harbor) and low in development. I'm not sure if previous poster meant infamous or not, but there's a lot more to the area than bug season!

I commuted from Sherborn to Cambridge every day for a few years. Travel time was 45 minutes. You cannot get much more rural and better schools than Sherborn. There are only 1100 houses in the entire town. The town owns more than 50% of all the land in the town. Taxes are high, schools #1 in the state, no streetlights, no city water, no sewer. Roads are narrow and there are very big trees right next to the road. Not much salt use in the Winter so the roads are worse than neighboring towns.
There is basically no shopping, Wellesley is 6 miles from center, no rail or bus. 3 ac zoning in most of the town and you will find much larger lots.

Typical road
