Well I happy to see Mass did well on these tests (at least math and science). But I'm not too sure that these "standardized" test tell us everything. I mean yes. The test show we have a good knowledge base. But I'm not sure if these tests can quantify/qualify how the students will do once they go out into the world and compete nationally and internationally for jobs, trade, ect.

Thoughts on this anyone?

Absolutely shocking to see Florida's scores so high. Maybe they didn't limit the testing to public schools.

Why are they comparing some smart states in the US to whole countries like Russia or China and all of its countryside? Why not compare to Moscow or Beijing to make for a level playing field? Seems like a strange comparison.

IMHO this is nothing to celebrate. US is at best stagnating, or at worst sliding into less than mediocre public education environment.
Full article is actually very negative about US achievement and rightly so.
It seems that most countries are investing lot more than we are willing to do, and it shows.

The numbers are even more sobering when compared among only the 34 OECD countries. The United States ranked 26th in math — trailing nations such as the Slovakia, Portugal and Russia. What’s more, American high school students dropped to 21st in science (from 17th in 2009) and slipped to 17th in reading (from 14th in 2009), according to the results.

U.S. scores on the PISA have stayed relatively flat since testing began in 2000. And meanwhile, students in countries like Ireland and Poland have demonstrated marked improvement — even surpassing U.S. students, according to the results.

I believe originally when we first started doing these tests it was only the United States as a whole. Massachusetts decided to be ranked as a nation in and of itself. Why??? Not sure.

Though I would have preferred if we were going to be ranked as a nation.....we would have the ability to change our name for the ranking.....So we could be....Red Sox nation.

US teens lag in global education rankings as Asian countries rise to the top

By Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer, NBC News

Roughly half a million students in 65 nations and educational systems representing 80 percent of the global economy took part in the 2012 edition of PISA, which is coordinated by the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD.

The exam, which has been administered every three years to 15-year-olds, is designed to gauge how students use the material they have learned inside and outside the classroom to solve problems.

I just finished reading elsewhere about this. These three states decided to submit their results separately to see where they stood internationally. As in this country education is state run instead of a uniform system most countries use. From what I understood Massachusetts scored above average in all categories, Connecticut scored average and above average, while Florida was all over the map.
I was vaguely pleased with the results. It is just a standardized test so take it as you will. I remember reading up on Finland's system a few years ago. It seemed to me to make the most sense but just my opinion.
