My wife and 2 girls want to move back to Mass. We have lived in San Diego for close to 7 yrs. I was born in Cambridge...lived in Malden for ten yrs before we moved. Our daughters are 5 and 7...so school is very important. We would like to be close to Boston proper, but still the schooling is the most important. Any help???

I work for DHS, so I just need to transfer, Logan airport. So I dont see much of a problem for travel. I know it's changed alot in 7 yrs!!

We just need some input on where to start looking. It's funny, I grew up there but have no idea where to start. I bumped into this site and really like the replies I have read so far.

So where to raise a family?
Schools, K-8. and a good high school.
Affordable housing...rental at first.

Well any help would be good. I miss the Sox and want my kids to grow up the way I did. Cambridge is good area, but not to sure about the schooling there.
Thanks in advance

hey northcide,

When you have a chance, check out Rehoboth, Ma. They have a great school system.
Nice town to raise your children, one of the best kept secrets.

I was born and raised in Medford. I live on the south shore and love it. I go back to visit Medford and Boston, but I love pulling into my driveway on the south shore. Lots of room down here.

How far from the city do you want to be and would you be driving in or using other transportation? If you want public schools that are good near Boston, without knowing your budget, I would consider Newton, Needham,Wellesley,Belmont,Arlington,Winchester as they are reasonably close to the city with transportation into Boston and very good schools. If you want to stay in the city, then I would do private schools. North Shore and South Shore are very nice but not easily accessible to Boston, imo.

Do I understand that you'd be working at the airport? Then it's Winthrop, hands down. One of those best-kept secrets. Easy access to the airport and a lovely family-oriented community, from what I hear.

Thanks for the input. My wife and I were speaking of Newton or Wellesley, thay are both great places. I'm not to sure about the drive, so transportation is important. As far as work, well I work for DHS, so it's more likely Logan. My pay scale changes from year to year....going up I hope!!...

So far you guys are giving me lots of help....I do appreciate it very much.

Thanks again

Newton and Wellesley are two of the most sought-after towns in the state.

Regarding Lowell: New England has a phenomenon that most other parts of the country do not have--very old, economically dead cities. They're old mill or fishing cities that 100+ years ago were thriving communities but today are economically depressed, crumbling, and home to many social and economic ills. These places in MA are essentially pockets of poverty that exist in a prosperous state. The cities have some charms--great old architecture, for example. But they are the civic equivalent of "dead man walking:" populated economic ghost towns. New Bedford and Fall River are two other examples.

Another option to consider is T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island. It's very nice with easy access and close to the Mass. border. There are many towns that are very nice and probably less expensive than suburban Boston. I avoid Logan at all costs. It's a nightmare to get in and out of.

Wow....Lowel?...and New Bedford and Fall River? Even growing up, those areas were not doing to well. They are not on my map! It's very sad to see good cities go down the drain and the state do nothing.

I did not even think about Phode Island or the Conn states. I like Logan because its a busy port....getting there is another issue. I have to do more research this weekend.

Again thanks for the input....

Green is also very busy. It's become the alternative to Logan even for people who are closer to Boston. It's about the same distance for me, but I prefer the drive to Green. Parking is less expensive and it's so easy to get in and out. Right off 95. It's also less confusing once your inside.
New Bedford and Fall River are more urban, but there are many surrounding towns that are quite peaceful and more rural.
