I was at CVS the other day which happend to be the one in my town because that's the one I was driving by and there was an issue with the cashier being away from the register helping someone so we had to wait a minute. the older woman in front of me was complaining about how "this is the only gig in town" and i said "well, theres another one up the street" until I realized she literally meant "in town."

Made me think... do you specifically shop in your town? Even if the same store is closer to you but in a neighboring town?

I always try to shop locally whenever possible. Mostly, it's to support small businesses but also it's because of convenience. There's a great (from the perspective of customer service) in town but the prices on most items are double what they charge at Home Depot, etc. I still shop there if I need a thing or two or some advice but for larger shopping trips I find myself going out of town. Luckily, there's enough shopping locally in town where I don't have to leave for day-to-day things.

Also, we have two CVS locations and a Walgreens so if one is crowded I have two other stores to choose from.

I shop wherever is convenient to me, which is rarely in my town. For example in my town of Sudbury all the commercial areas are on Rt-20 which isn't convenient to me since I'm off Rt-27. Since there are no businesses on Rt-27, I end up stopping by either Natick or Wayland (both on Rt-27) because they happen to be on my way home from work. Also if I want a quick bite to eat and I'm at home, I'll drive to Maynard because it's closer to North Sudbury than Sudbury's own commercial strip which is on the south side of town.

Is there a reason people prefer to shop in their own town even if it's less convenient or more expensive?

but what is the difference between supporting your town's CVS vs the neighboring town's CVS? to make sure it stays around?

When it comes to chain stores I'll shop at any location. If I go to the local CVS it's more because it's convenient. However, I try to support small local businesses whenever possible and reasonable like the hardware store I mentioned.

Im very consumeristic - if there's such word: I shop where it's most convenient for me in terms of my route, and where I get better service / prices. Once I find a decent combination of the 2 or better all 3, that's where I will shop continuously.

Doesn't mean I don't explore new places, that's how one can find hidden gems, but generally it does not depend on town / city where I live in. I will support some VERY local business - say sandwich place around the corner of where I live (or where I work, or where my kids have gymnastics class), because I like the convenience of it being so close by, and would love for them to stay in biz. or if someone I know runs the biz - I will support them.
I think taxes that I pay is a good way to support my town, and if I feel like offering extra, I can make a donation.
Oh, and I go to the post office where clerks are nicer (and I know at what times during the day there are less people). Post offices seem to be more of "towny thing", as I notice though.

One of the best things about living in Waltham was that everything was available in town. DH and I would joke about how we could go weeks and never need anything outside of Waltham. But whether we paronized the 3 Waltham CVSs or the Watertown CVS made no difference to us. We did preferentially shop at local businesses over chains however so our prescriptions were at Johnson's and Roger's not at CVS, hardware from Ace even though there was a Depot, etc.

No. I live on the Cape so there isn't really shopping here. I really don't stay within my town AT ALL for like, anything. Even the stores in the mall (oh, lol, which actually isn't technically in my town) are smaller than they should be, so it's really hard to find stuff I like as a young person. I only really buy my groceries in my town, for clothes and what not I usually venture much, much farther away.

I shop the independent local businesses in my town Acton, also Concord and Maynard, grocery shop at the new shopping mall in Westford. Used to do the Nashua thing more, but extra $$ spent on gasoline and more travel time negated the benefits, so I stay closer to home these days.

When I lived in Lowell I patronized the local Lowes and Target in order to support the redevelopment and economic growth of the city. I also did my grocery shopping as close to home as possible. For me it was generally the Market Basket on Route 110 (Lowell/Chelmsford border). For anything else I generally ignored the surrounding MA suburbs and went to Nashua once every couple of weeks or so.

My current town has very little retail. There is a gas station not far from me that has consistently competitive prices and I fill my truck up there about 90% of the time. There is also a local Subway and House of Pizza and when I have guests over we often grab food from either of those places. Shopping for groceries and general merchandise has to be in Plaistow or Salem for me.
