Does anyone have an estimate of how bad a commute from Newton to Lowell would be?

My wife and I would like to buy in Winchester or Reading this coming season, and I'm looking for other towns because while W and R look fine, the markets are small enough that I'm concerned whether we'd be able to find a house we like.

Newton to Lowell means Rte 128 to Rte 3 or Mass Pike to I495. Not a pleasant commute.

I would suggest you might consider Andover or North Reading. Maybe closer to Lowell in Chelmsford, Westford, Littleton, Bedford if only commute is to Lowell. From Reading or Winchester you would be going against traffic when commuting to Lowell in the AM so not a bad commute and those towns put you closer to Boston.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Right, we live in Winchester now; the commute to Lowell isn't bad. (For some odd reason it's much, much worse in the afternoon than in the morning, though.)

My wife works in Gov Center and takes the commuter rail; Chelmsford etc wouldn't be great for her. We looked at North Reading and thought it a bit too rural for our taste, though we should probably keep considering it just to boost the total market size we're looking at. Andover might be good, though again the commute might be stretch for her.

Living in Chelmsford was she thinking of getting the North Station train from Lowell or Billerica?

Yeah, she'd get one of those trains. But it's pretty much a non-starter; for her, the commute would be too long. (Meaning, for a lot of people it wouldn't be too long, but it is for her.)
