Hi,
we are a young family moving to Boston from NY/NJ area. We are interested in enrolling my son at the Cape Ann Waldorf in Beverly. However hubby will be working in Rockland area (will be commuting by car).
We are keen on staying close to the waldorf school in Beverly, budget is 500-600K and would like to be in a neighborhood that has a reasonable commute for hubby (max travel time of 1 hr), reasonably safe neighborhood, family friendly activities, parks etc.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

That is a nightmare commute from North to South Shore. Have you considered living on the South Shore? There are some private schools on the SS you may consider though none are Waldorf. The only Waldorf south of Boston is in Bourne.

We zeroed on the Cape Ann waldorf as it was rated well and fees were reasonable (compared to the one in Lexington). we were wondering about the Waldorf school in Bourne but received mixed reviews about the faculty. What are my options on the south shore? thanks

Nightmare commute. Reconsider all your choices.

What are the other possible towns in south shore that you would recommend?

What is your criteria? You chose North Shore for ease of commute to school without consideration for your hisband's work commute so I assume that is your #1 priority. Is there another school you would consider on the South Shore that you want to stay close to? (For primary grades off the top of my head there is the INLY School in Scituate and Derby Academy in Hingham) Would you consider a well regarded public district and increase your housing budget? If you only want Waldorf, you could live in Plymouth. Depending on where in town you lived. You could have as little as a 20-30 minute commute to Bourne and 35ish to Rockland.

I agree with everyone else. That commute is an absolute nightmare. Google maps estimates the drive at 1 hour without traffic. I can only imagine how long that drive would take during rush hour.

Many of the public school systems in this state are excellent. Have you considered that option? This state on the whole has one of the better public school systems in the country. If you're dead set on private school, what other schools closer to your husband's work would you consider?

This is a tricky situation. I agree with others that the commute from Beverly to Rockland would be beyond atrocious. The Waldorf school on Cape Cod looks as though it may have moved to Cotuit, which would be significantly farther from Rockland than Bourne. Commuting from either Bourne or Cotuit to Rockland would be horrid in my opinion, especially during tourist season.

Also not great but maybe a little bit better would be to commute via 128 from the Lexington area, home of another Waldorf school about which I've heard good things. A quick check reveals that tuition there isn't vastly different from the Cape Ann school. That said, your housing budget would be stretched to the max in Lexington itself. You might be able to find something good in North Waltham, just south of the Lexington line, so at least you'd be living on the right side as far as commuting farther south is concerned.

None of these three Waldorf schools puts you in a great location for commuting to Rockland, but I believe that the Waltham/Lexington option is the least bad of the three.

Can't be done from the North Shore with a commute to Rockland.

Why the Waldorf school? The Mass. public schools are the best in the country.

It's would be a Herculean task to find something liveable in Lexington within the OP's budget unless they went with a condo. That price range is mostly tear downs so not only are most of the homes in bad shape but you're competing against builders who's offers have far more attractive terms.
