Best Place to Live Around the South Shore
I am looking to relocate in the near future. The best thing is I am in no hurry and I do not have to move.
I have a home my wife and I love but we need a garage and that is something we can't build because of the land (not enough room)
So I am starting my search of towns first. Where is the best place to live? Is there a place to go on the Internet that has a list of what towns have to offer?
Thanks

Well what are you looking for in a town and what are your current needs from a town.
EX.
1.are your retired or a young family with a need to travel to work?
2.Are you looking for a place near Ocean?
3. How much money on a home your willing to spend?
4. What is your current town like and do you want something like it?
etc. etc.

Not retired, have about 10 years to go.
Children 21 and over
Money for a house is approx 400,000
Current town, I don't like it, nothing in town for us, not as safe as it use to be.
I can deal with travel that's why I outlined the area I was looking at.

1. Duxbury nice town, very safe town $400,000 will put you at the lower end of the housing market.
There will be more people on this forum that will tell you better know Duxbury than I. Just hold on for a little bit.
Duxbury, MA -
Ex. of house

2. Hingham A little closer to Boston should be in your range to buy. building a garage should be doable.
Town of Hingham Massachusetts, Incorporated 1635
Ex. of housing
Single Family Home - Hingham, MA, 02043 - Realtor.com
3. Marshfield. I'm originally from this town and see family monthly there. This is a very affordable town. As far as I remember you need about an acre to build the garage you want. which should not be the hard it a big town with bit of space still to build on/add on. As for the town itself. Well it a town in change it going for a blue collar town to a more middle management town. but the basic vibe is still blue collar.
Welcome to Marshfield, Massachusetts
Ex of housing.

4. Plymouth Well the town is huge so it hard to say exactly where to live in the town. A little part of Plymouth called Manomet is nice and should give you a space for build a garage or having a garage on you home.
Welcome to Plymouth, MA
Ex of housing.

There are a lot of great options on the south shore depending on how far from Boston you want to be. 400,000 won't get you too far in Hingham, Cohasset, or Duxbury but if you're kids are all grown there is no real need for these towns anyways. They are all great towns though so I would still look (depends how big of a house you are expecting with 400,000). Marshfield has a lot of different sections with typical beach-houses along the numerous beach communities and some large houses with larger lots inland. Scituate and Hull also have a broad range but are fine towns. You certainly won't have to worry about safety in any of the coastal towns so when people say some are nicer than others it is usually a matter of home size, schools, and general price. If you are willing to be further from Boston Kingston and Plymouth will get you more bang for your buck and Wareham, as someone mentioned, and other Buzzard's Bay towns are a hidden gem but a long way from Boston for sure. Plymouth is the largest town land-wise in Mass and there are massive developments going on so it is hard to say what direction it will go in. On the other hand, If you want to be real close to Boston, Weymouth is a nice town but a definitely a little bit more urban than any of the others I've mentioned. Quincy is the city on the water just outside Boston and is definitely a real city, there are some rough areas, but some nice areas too. I covered all the towns on the coast from Boston to the cape but if you are willing to be a little inland but still on the South Shore you have a whole bunch more options.

Buzzards Bay (a village in Bourne) has many options too. And it's a short drive to the T in Middleborough. Good prices, too. Depending on your price range, Wareham has many options. The village of Onset is lovely.
