I grew up in Andover. I can't tell you how many Vikings just roam the street over there. You can't go anywhere near Thor's house in the wintertime. There are tons of traffic jams in the downtown area because of all the damn cross-country skiers. There are shrines to the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in all the schools. The town is ruled by the omnipotent Lundquist clan.
I'm not sure that is the adjective I'd use........
The town is nice. Very good schools -- not great. Relatively wealthy town -- but not the wealthiest. People are what you'd expect -- generally nice with some bad apples. It is the nicest town, by far, in the merrimack valley which makes it stand out. But as far as measurables, schools, and wealth, it does fall behind many of the metro-west towns.

So we were in NL before and used to bike a lot, here there's a bike path , not sure if anywhere else there's one. we would like a place where you can have a nice downtown, with a bit of "life" (that for us means having an ice cream while walking or sitting in a park or having a beer somewhere and watching people coming and going, I know it's very European.....) .
A safe place (btw the fact that Lawrence is so close to Andover, are there any issue?)
Girls like to sing and play piano. One like to dance , the other is into synchro skating. We have no family here so a place where you can meet people and make friends. We like diversity but not if the one diverse is me-no offense but last time we went to see a house in Acton we were they only one not Asian, it was a new community and it was predominantly Asian.
I would like to live in a place where I can integrate.
On the Boxborough/Acton line is a great ice skating rink, Nashoba Valley Olympia. They have hockey teams, competitive ice skating and open social ice skating several times a week. Hockey, lacrosse and soccer are big here, along with gymnastics. West Acton has a popular ballet school.
I think you might like the part of Acton close to the town center (not to be confused with West Acton village) close to the Arboretum for walks around the changing gardens.
Parts of South Acton you may like. That would offer better access to Maynard and West Concord centers. Serendipity in Maynard Center is fun. People hang out there and play board games, parents read books to their kids, live music and a piano on site.
West Concord, Reasons to be Cheerful, the best gelato and crepes, fun for the kids. Nashoba Brook Bakery, a fun waffle bar for Sunday brunch. Check out Emerson Umbrella on the other side of Concord for children's art and dance lessons.
It sounds like West Concord could be a fit.

Any highlights, places where the OP can visit with family and get a slice of life in Andover.

I don't want a big house but one where I would feel good living in.
I assure you, it's not a good feeling waking up in the morning in an house you don't like.
I've been "waking up in the morning in an house I don't like" since 1985. I rented it, then bought it in '98 when my landlords wanted to sell (long story, & I got a really good price then). But my house is truly "tear-down" quality, so spending $$ on it would be a bottomless pit, & then I'd still probably get the tear-down price when I sell.
My point is that, If you got a house that was basically a good house, &
would be worth doing improvements to ,
and you liked the neighborhood & the town, It could be worth compromising on the house, to live in that town.
One thing I've noticed, in all these years, it's the really "primo" towns, like Lexington, Concord, Wellesley, Newton, etc., that hold their R.E. values even during a bad recession: the prices don't seem to go down, they just stop going up for awhile. Have you considered Arlington? It ain't cheap, but hopefully for $800K, you could get a better house than in Lexington (?).

I agree. If you find a place in Lexington with good bones, you will undoubtedly make a nice profit if you ever end up having to move.

You will not like Westford then. We have no downtown like that. The town center is very pretty and very traditionally New England looking, but there is no retail and no restaurants there. Well, one tiny store and then just Town Hall, Library, Museum, Art Center, Police and Fire, private residences. It is pretty deserted in the evening. The only time I'd ever call it lively is when the Farmers Market is there or there is a festival of some kind. The retail and restaurants are mostly packed in on Route 110, not a place you'd be sitting and people watching...think more "Route 9" than someplace like Lexington/Concord/Wellesley Centers.
