Winchester Trash
Is it true Winchester residents have to take their own trash to the dump? We have a possible chance to relo to the Cambridge area and were looking at Winchester but there is no way I'm going to haul trash in my car.
Thanks,
D.

I looked at their website and that does appear to be the case. However, Winchester is not the only town that doesn't have trash collection. Usually if people don't want to transport the trash themselves, there a private companies in the area that you can hire.

That is most certainly the case.
IMO it really isn't a big deal. The dump is short drive from anywhere, 10 min max from the far west side. It is a little ridiculous that you need to pay 100 bucks a year to drop off your trash but it's probably cheaper than having trash pick up. It's basiclly because people don't want trash in the street which is pretty snobby I guess but i've been used to it my whole life so I always think it looks awful when I drive through other towns with trash along the streets. Im not sure about private companies but I assume they do exist. Winchester is an awesome town, you really shouldn't let that be a deciding factor but it is something you'll have to deal with if you live there.

There are a LOT of towns in the Boston burbs that don't have curbside pickup. Probably most of them. You can find a private hauler to pick up your trash, but why?

There is a way around having trash on the curbs. In the town I grew up in (northern NJ), the trash men came up to everyone's garage to get the trash cans. And my 8-car-length driveway was pretty common in the town! That probably made their jobs 3x longer though.

It's the same case in Sherborn. With the private trash service here, the guys go right into my garage to pick up the bags.

You must know them well, or be very trusting. I couldn't do that, if they came into my garage - they'd have access to the rest of the house. Maybe the private companies have a better quality of employee?
A friend of mine who lives in Norfolk bought a used pick-up just for a "dump car", so they could haul trash and not get the other cars dirty.

Concord and Wellesley also don't have trash pickup. Imo it's not that difficult to package your trash in such a way that it doesn't dirty up your car. I use heavy duty contractor bags if I have anything messy to throw out.
And think that it's a good thing for people to be more aware of what they are throwing out each week.

My next door neighbor also has a "dump truck" and it comes in handy a lot of other times it seems too. I agree with most of the general opinion that it really isn't a big deal. Miu's right about bheavy duty bags and we usually throw a tarp down. My mother uses her station wagon, I guess it would be pretty tough with a smaller car but very doable.

I think private trash pick up is about $10/wk... $500 a year for your convenience.
