There's only one race that the Cape-Verdeans should be considered and that's the HUMAN RACE. I think everyone should stop trying to label them this and that and just let them be proud of their uniqueness. I think everyone has the right to embrace all that they are. If they are bi-racial, they should be proud to be BOTH and they should also be allowed to consider themselves BOTH. Why should the black race be more important than the white race or vice versa. For instance, everyone's so quick to tell a bi-racial person that they are black with no regards to their white side, but heaven forbid should that person also identify their white side. I think we all need to stop telling others who and what they are and let them identify with which ever race or culture they are most comfortable with. More importantly, we should remember the human race, period. So, if they Cape-Verdeans are happy to stick with just that one title, they have that right and no one should tell them otherwise. Have a wonderful evening everyone.

Hi Heather
Im half portuguese half irish, but grew up culture wise, Portuguese, and married a cape verdean, so My daughter is both. To be honest I think you will find that some portuguese are racist, some are not thats the plain truth. But Embrace the Portuguese culture. and most posts have been right on Target. Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton have huge Portuguese populations. I grew up in Taunton, but now live in Rhode Island. Good Luck, Forca!

I'm Irish. My best friend growing up was Portuguese and his dad was a chef for the dorms at Harvard. he used to cook us up some great stuff, but those cherice (sp) sausages were the best! Too bad I'm a vegetarian now.

Lots of Brazilians there, too, and restaurants with their food. Try the guarana soda!

For an alternative to south of the Boston area there's Gloucester. I haven't been to Gloucester in a long time, so I'm not current, but it used to be Portuguese fishermen and their families.

my mom was black and from brazil and when she came to the US with my dad they moved near Boston. She now lives in New Mexico but has often stated that she loved Boston. I think its really hit and miss depending on what types of people you run into.

A lot of the Brazilians in Boston are going back now because of tightening of immigration rules and increasing opportunities in Brazil. Too bad. It's a wonderful culture, even if a tough language for North Americans, and the Brazilian women I've known were incredible!

My daughter is attending Bristol Comm College in the fall. We need to move an are considering New Bedford. I have heard horror stories lately about this town but thought it was really nice. Does anyone have more info on the town itself regarding safety and living situations there?
