I don't mean to be sound like a freeloader, but how are the social services in this state?, and are all the counties basically the same?
I need to relocate and I want to move to a state where I can get some help getting setup with an apartment...I thought MA was pretty good for this and I plan on making some calls on Monday, but I am curious if anyone would know for sure. Are they generally generous as far as basic needs go?

no way bro! I'm an east coast man 4 life...I couldn't swing it in CA, it'd be a totally foreign experience. I'm coming to Mass, this thread doesn't even matter!

A lot of the counties in MA don't have county government. (8 out of 14) It is more city/town based. I didn't really know there was such a thing as county government until I moved to Florida, as the county I lived in, in MA abolished county government when i was a teen, so I have no memory of it. Plus when I moved to CT they had abolished county government a long time ago.

So, you're gunning to be a bum here in the Bay State? Wonderful...I am voting republican this time around.

Yup, when I lived in Atlanta I paid my real estate taxes to the county. It paid for schools, infrastructure, etc. just like town/city real estate taxes here, except it was a lot more efficient to have administration at the county level. That's part of the reason why taxes are so high up here - town government is woefully inefficient.
No personal attacks or else CaseyB is going to ban you, although I don't believe general politics is allowed in the state forums either. I was given a warning once for talking politics, that's how I know.

Wow, I never even thought about that, but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense. Now, that I'm back up north and not having county government anymore, it feels weird! Before I moved to Florida, I always thought counties were more just for borders and when you got called for jury duty where you had to report to.

Maybe New Jersey then? Or Florida?
