How about the "other cape"? Cape Ann? If you can afford it, Essex, Manchester-By-The-Sea and Rockport are really nice. It has much less tourist traffic than Cape Cod (with the exception of maybe Rockport).

Forget the cape and come and see Westport. It is just as pretty, no bridges, close to the highway for a commute to Boston or Providance. the taxes are really low. We are renting an antique farmhouse on 32 acres 2 miles from pristine beaches for $1400 a month. There is no Boardwalk mentality on the beaces, there are dunes and Horseneck Beach is fabulous. The town of Westport is small but swells in the summer. Being close to Prividance we can go to theater within 20 min, Boston about 50 min. the drawback is that the area is very "settled" we are one of the few transplants, or so I thought, until I joined into art guilds and clubs for the kids. There is great joy in walking the beach in the fall. The area is quite damp. Constant sea breeze but high water table makes for mold issues even grows on your back if you sit too long. that is the downside but Allens Neck and South Dartmouth are beautiful bucolic natural area to explore. The Lloyd Center and Westport Watershed Alliance gives familieas a great perspective on coastal living.
I found alot of the towns closer to the cape like Onset and Waltham to be depressing and run down. Take 195 to exit 10 Rt 88 and drive to the end travel the roads off the highway and you will see the true Westport

I live on the Cape
I grew up in Carver Ma which is a few miles north of the actual cape. Small wonderful town. Then moved next door to Plymouth (America's home town) where my husband grew up. We bought a house in Sandwich two years ago and I must admit, I miss "home" (Carver/Plymouth).
Yes, there is traffic in the summer which stinks, yes it can be boring sometimes but they definitely have things you can do with children any time of year. We frequent the playgrounds, canal (rollerblading), indoor playgrounds (Hyannis), the mall (Hyannis), and there are always playdates. The town is beautiful, clean, safe but I find the people aren't as outgoing/friendly as I thought they'd be. A lot of them already know one another and it's hard to make new friends (I am very outgoing as are my children by the way). We don't get much snow however the year we moved there we had a record snowfall and (at least our town) doesn't allot money for snowplows so it was REALLY bad (our neighborhood wasn't plowed for 3 days during one storm and I had a 9 month old at home!!). It is more expensive here (groceries, taxes are similar to Plymouth area, gas etc).
So is the cape a nice place to live - yes it can be. But I really enjoyed the Plymouth/Carver area more!

Don't live on the Cape year round! You will not be doing your child any justice. If you want a Cape-like town with more sophistication, consider Duxbury, Cohasset or Scituate. All beautiful but more suburban and more affluent.

I've lived on the Cape year round for 10 years (Bourne, to be exact). Having grown up in a more urban area, it was an adjustment, but I don't see me moving anytime soon. My children (16 & 13) are getting a great education. I know pretty much every kid in their schools and wouldn't classify even one as hoodlum. Sorry, that comment cracked me up! Both of my kids are involved in one thing or another year round. Our middle school is only about 8 years old and there's a new elementary school under construction now. I've noticed when we travel to other larger towns for sports, I'm always grateful my kids are growing up here rather than there.
Yes, there's more to do in the summer but I don't lack for anything to do in the winter. If you want to sit on your butt and do nothing, that's fine. But it's a personal choice.
Further down-Cape it does get a little more desolate. Hyannis is very busy and resembles more of an urban area. I prefer the upper Cape. Closer to shopping, off-Cape destinations like Plymouth, Boston and Providence.
It would also depend on what kind of work you do.

Cape Cod
I just moved to near the cape. You couldn't pay me to live there! There's absolutely nothing there..it's too far from everything. All I heard about was cape cape cape..you can have the cape. The beaches are barely O.K. and the water is too cold to swim in. And it's only "open" in the summer, and you better hope summer falls on a weekend you are off.
The hospital there is barely adequate as well.

Cape Cod
This is for Dennis-if you are from the west coast of Florida (I grew up in Fl..and just moved to near cape cod from FL recently) you are going to think they are way backwards here. If you have a 5 year old..DO NOT GO TO CAPE COD. I have a 3 year old..and now that I've seen CC, I wouldn't dare move there. Boring.nothing to do, and FAR from anything cultural.
There is nothing great about it! Besides, the drug and alcohol rate there is astonishing! I worked in a hospital there for a very short time..all I saw was IV drug users and alcoholic overdoses. I never seen anything like it in my nursing career! The hospital is barely up to par
